I sighed, pressing my fingers to my forehead as I sunk onto my couch. My fingers clenched the sheet of paper so hard that I could feel the tips of my fingers go numb.
This was it. Just what I feared.
An Eviction Notice.
I looked around the little apartment that had costed me my life's savings. Mumbai was expensive, no doubt, more so, with the rent being raised exponentially every year.
Expenses skyrocketed, even as our salaries crash-landed.
My eyes flitted over to Cheeni, who lay on the bed in deep slumber, quite evidently obscure of the fact that this could perhaps be one of her last nights in the little apartment. Her ring finger and her little finger were crossed over each other, something she did often whenever she was either in deep sleep or under tremendous stress.
I smiled, picking up a little cushion and pressing it to my chest. Her action reminded me of someone who had a similar habit. Except, he would cross his index and his middle finger and not the last two.
Sid.
As much as he'd want me to sit and mope over him, I had more pressing matters to attend to. Anaisha tossed and turned on her bed, kicking her blanket away. In only about two kicks, the blanket had gone from a protective cocoon to forming a useless pile on the wooden flooring.
Again, kicking runs in her genes. Quite literally. It reminded me of the days I carried her. Her untimely kicks would keep me up all through the night and whenever I planned to catch up on my lost sleep, in the day. It was as if she knew every time I wanted to take a nap.
I gently laid down next to Anaisha, carefully cradling her head on my hand. She frowned in her sleep as she leaned into my side, pressing her face into my chest.
"Cheeni... Baby, wake up." I gently stroked her hair with my fingers.
She yawned before her eyes fluttered open. Squinting at me, she wrapped her tiny palm around my index finger.
"Good morning, Mumma."
Before I could reply, Aman barged in through the front door.
"Harleen!" He beamed, carrying an envelope in his hands.
Anaisha blinked at me as she looked at Aman while pouting her lips. I stood up to greet him, my cheeks heating up.
"Babe, you have no idea how much I missed you!" Aman smiled and embraced me in a warm hug.
"I missed you too, Aman." I smiled, burying my face in his jacket.
He tossed the envelope onto Anaisha's bed, before angling my face upwards. He looked into my eyes while I subconsciously fidgeted with his zipper. With a soft smile, he leaned in to kiss me.
