Sunny
"You know, maybe I would give you more treats if you didn't shit right after I gave you a bath," I tell my dog, Lily.
She's following me around the grooming salon like a, well...dog. As I begin closing up for the night. Lily and I had a busy day of grooming and spoiling a lot of dogs. As my right hand girl, her job is to follow me around and beg me for snacks. She's the best at that.
Closing out the register, I leash Lily and begin our walk home. It's a cold winter night in Albright and maybe I should have drove to work, but the streets aren't as busy as they will be in a few more months once summer begins. I enjoy the solitude. The walk home is quick anyway, I don't live too far from the center of town.
Lily and I pass a few town folk, all who recognize us. We are kinda part of the unofficial first family of this town. We've lived here for as long as I've been alive, my family before that, and my family before that as well. I try not to engage too long, New England winters are brutal, especially by the seaside. All I have keeping me warm are my leather jacket and my cigarette.
It's not hard to miss my house. The newly renovated beach house is more than my dad and I need. Yet, it's still cozy enough to be my place of comfort. I immediately forget about the harsh cold as soon as the home is in sight. Lily does, too. She knows she's home so she begins running, pulling me along with her.
Stepping into our foyer, I can see all the way across the house into the kitchen, where my dad and a few of his campaign staffers are still working; Collins 2020 campaign merchandise surrounding them. In a few months, Joseph Collins will be running for state governor after years of being involved in local politics. He has a great chance of winning and I couldn't be any more proud of him.
Lily betrays me as soon as I let her off the leash and runs over to the kitchen. I join her not long after, feeling out of place in the midst of the on-going conversation before my dad notices me standing close by.
"Sunny, you're home." He smiles at me and pulls me into a hug. "What are your plans for tonight?" he asks.
"I think I'm going out to a friend's tonight with Clara." I say as I grab a water out of the fridge.
After a few more formalities with my dad's staff, it's time for me to head upstairs and get ready for tonight. As I say goodbye to my dad and the remaining campaign staff, Benny, one of my dad's campaign members, makes eye contact with me before standing up.
"It's time for me to go, Mr. Collins. I will keep in touch regarding your meeting this coming Tuesday." He says as he grabs his belongings.
"Thanks for everything, Bennington." My dad says before motioning to me. "Sunny, would you mind walking him out."
"Sure, Dad." I smile.
Benny is a year older than me and is also an Albright townie. He's in his final year as a political science major at Harvard so he is interning with my dad for his campaign. Benny is tall, with dark brown hair, brown eyes, a killer jawline, and a panty-dropping smile. As he walks with me to the foyer, I can't help but marvel at how handsome he looks with his suit, white shirt undone.
