i wake up in the morning, my head was pretty fuzzy. pizza boxes were everywhere, strewn popcorn. all my friends were asleep. maihua was next to, her arm slung over me. her expression was peaceful, a few of her curls on her closed eyes.

i sit up and interlock my fingers while stretching out my arms. i hated being the first to wake up at a sleepover. always so awkward, the light was beaming through her blind, setting an early morning hew over her apartment. i reach for my phone and turn onto the lockscreen. 6:41am. damn. 

i scroll on my phone and instinctively open my messages to text my mom. typing a message along the line of  "i've eaten breakfast at mai's. be home at 10 like usual." but then i felt my heart pang, realisation hitting me once more. i quickly delete the text and type a new one. "miss you.".

"you know... i used to text my nanna when she died. until they took away her number." maihua says, her eyes were still closed. i shake my head softly and smile.

"ill miss her. not being around." i say my voice cracking a bit. maihua opens her eyes slightly and looks up at me. her brown eyes glinted with sympathy.

"not to be harsh. but... what's done is done, y/n." maihua says, her voice was calm. "i know you miss her very much but, you have to move on in life."

"i know.. its just. while wanting to strive for my dreams of getting my dream job... i wanted my mom by my side." i say, i fall back to where i was layed, maihua props her head up with her hand while facing me. "and she has been, for the past 18 years. until now."

"y/n. dont you think for a second that she isn't by your side. " maihua says. "she's always with you, in your heart, in your memories."

i turn to face maihua, she places her head on the pillow. tears start to form in my eyes. due to being on my side, they run down my nose onto the pillow. i sniff.

"you dummy." she says as she places her hand on my cheek, wiping my tears off them. i smile as they continue to fall, i place my hand on top of hers as she attempts to wipe them away. "your a cute crier."

"this is the beginning, i won't be cute until i look high and have snot everywhere," i say as i sniff. maihua chuckles and tucks a piece of hair behind my ear.

"you need to get your mind off things." mai says as she pulls me into a hug, i nuzzle into her shoulder smelling her cologne. she strokes my hair. i hear one massive snore erupt from one of the girls i giggle. maihua laughs too. "i think that was sabrina."

we both sit up, maihua was on instagram, looking at fanart and edits of herself. liking a couple and smiling at them. i rest my head on her shoulder watching them too.

we all sat in our usual spot in the coffee shop. sabrina yapping on about her new nail design.

"honestly, it was a trust the process kinda thing" sabrina says as india inspects them. "the green she put on was just not it until she added the black flames."

 i recieved a call from the police station. the vibrations buzzing on the table.

"ooh is that maihua?"

"ehem." maihua says bringing her fist to her hand like shes coughing. sabrina makes an 'o' shape with her mouth. i laugh as i press answer, a kind lady greeting me.

"hello, have i reached miss y/n l/n?"

"uh.. yes. yes you have."

"alright, well this is north carolina police station! ive come to call to update the entire situation" she explains. i nod and stand up, i hold the phone to my chest and mouth to my friends 'one second'.

i step outside the shop and sit down on a bench nearby.

"okay. i'm ready."

"alright, miss l/n, now with mr l/n's charges, we automatically arrested him with the evidence and witnesses. we can confirm he is jailed for life. your mom's will hasnt been finalised therefore, we are going to have to split the money into her two family members, thats you and her sister. the house will be sold."

"but... where will i stay?"

"we can offer you young homeless shelters. you're staying at a friends right? you can stay there, if you would like. otherwhise, we will have to fly you back to LA to stay with your immediate family, your aunt."

"alright, i understand."

"okay, miss l/n, well. i suggest talking to your aunt about your mom, and we'll leave it there, okay? alright, enjoy your day."

i sigh and put my head in my hands and walk out of the bathroom. to see my friends are gone and its just maihua. i walk up to her.

"where.. is everyone?" i ask as i settle back into the booth.

"went home." maihua says as she looks at me with a grin.

"oh."

"so, what did they say?" maihua asks leaning back in her seat.

"confirmed life sentence for d/n. me and my aunt are splitting the money left, and also i have to find a place to stay or they fly me back to LA to my aunt." i explain. i rub the back of my neck.

"ill let you live with me." maihua says nonchalantly.

"really?" i say. perking my head her.

"well duh, you're my girlfriend." maihua says with a smile. i hug her across the table.

"THANK YOU!" i say happily, she hugs back and laughs.

"your welcome." she replies.

me and maihua walk hand in hand, she turns and looks at the a bowing alley with neon lights flashing around. as if an imaginary lightbulb pops up she tugs my hand and ushers me into the bowling alley.

"where are you- oh!"

"my treat, you need a lil fun." mai says smiling as we reach the reception desk.
