During the next few weeks, Jungkook and Y/N's friendship slowly dissolved. She didn't wait outside for him in the morning and he spent most of his lunch periods at Mina's table.
Y/N tried to pretend she was okay with it, but deep down her heart was breaking. She spent a lot of time practicing with Yoongi for their piano duet. They had chosen a rendition of Havana by Camila Cabelo. It was pretty difficult piece, but they had enjoyed working on the song.
Hoseok had cornered Y/N at home one afternoon when Yoongi was hanging out with Jimin. He had refused to budge and Y/N ended up spilling the whole story about her soulmate mark. Hoseok's eyes had filled with tears for his friend when he realized the predicament she was in. He promised to do all he could to help her. After all, she had kept his secret about his true self. It was a secret that only the two of them knew, a secret that would devastate his family.
Y/N felt a little better after sharing the information with Hoseok. He had questioned why she hadn't shown to the mark to her soulmate, but Y/N refused to answer that question. She didn't want to tell Hoseok tat she feared being rejected by the person she had fallen in love with.
Y/N didn't even know when it happened. One day they were joking around, holding hands and the next she couldn't take her eyes off him.
Jungkook was devastated at what happened to his friendship with Y/N, but didn't know how to fix it. The few times he had called her, she made excuses about practicing with Yoongi. They hadn't spent any time alone together in three weeks and she hadn't texted him in almost two weeks. This was the longest they had ever gone without having a conversation. The few times he joined their lunch table, she gave him a quick hello and went back to talking to Yoongi and fighting off Jimin's advances.
Jungkook had seen Y/N and Yoongi out together several times. She always looked happy with him, usually holding his hand or her arm wrapped around his. He had been at the beach with Taehyung and Hoseok when he saw Y/N and Yoongi walking on the boardwalk. The wind had blown her hair into her face and Jungkook watched as Yoongi carefully pushed the hair from her face before pulling her close and kissing the top of her head.
Jungkook missed that easy affection they used to share. He missed seeing his best friend. He missed talking to her and holding her hand. He missed the late night conversations and the 2 AM pizza runs. He missed what they used to have.
To make matters worse, Jungkook was dealing with clingy Mina. She had decided to throw an elaborate party for her 23rd birthday and she wanted him to help with the planning. She was planning an outlandish soulmate mark reveal. Mina called him several times a day to ask what she should wear, what kind of food she should serve, and a whole bunch of other dumb ass questions he didn't care to answer.
Jungkook felt bad about the lack of interest he had in his girlfriend's birthday, but there was a weird feeling in his chest that wouldn't go away. His thoughts kept getting drawn to Y/N. He tried to convince himself it was because they had known each other for so long.
"Jungkook. Jungkook! JUNGKOOK!" a voice shrieked. Jungkook turned to look at Mina. He had gone shopping with her to look for the perfect dress for her party. This was the tenth store they visited and Jungkook lost track of how many dresses she had tried on. They were all beautiful and looked amazing on her perfect frame.
"I've been calling your name for the past three minutes," Mina complained, stamping her foot like a child. "What do you think of this one?" she asked, showing off an extremely short dress. It was strapless and almost backless. It was the color of wine and just grazed her upper thighs.
Jungkook looked at her in shock. "Don't you think that one's a little short?" he asked.
Mina shrugged. "When my soulmate mark appears during the ceremony, I want everyone to see it," she said simply.
"What even is this ceremony?" Jungkook asked. "I've never heard of it being done before."
Mina laughed at him, but inside she cringed at his naiveté when it came to the lifestyles of the rich. "It's common with the people in my circle," she said. "At a couple minutes to midnight, we stand in the middle of a stage under a spotlight and wait for the soulmate mark to appear."
Jungkook eyed her curiously. "You don't think the soulmate mark appearance is a private thing?" he asked.
Mina rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Oh my god Jungkook. Everyone is going to see it anyway. Might as well make it a ceremony," she said, disgust lacing her voice.
Jungkook shrugged at her response. "Okay Mina," he said. "But I still think that dress is too short, especially with all the guys you invited to the party."
Mina turned and looked at the dress closely in the mirror. "Well I like it," she said. "This is the one I am getting." She huffed and turned to go back into the dressing room.
When she came out with the dress draped over her arm, the sweet smile that Jungkook had fallen for was back in place. She wrapped her arm around his and kissed his neck. "Jungkook Oppa," she purred. "I really like this dress."
Jungkook's resolve melted. "Alright Mina. If that's the one you want, then I'll be happy with it. You look sexy in it anyway," he said, kissing her blond hair.
"Maybe we should think about taking the next step in our relationship," Mina purred in his ear. "We've been together for more than a year. Don't you think it's time?"
Jungkook felt a strange sensation in his chest at her words. "Mina, you know how I feel about the topic," he said, a warning in his voice.
Mina pulled her arm away, irritation on her face. "Yeah yeah. I know. You're waiting for your soulmate," she said mocking the words he had told her countless times. When she noticed Jungkook stiffen, she realized she pushed it too far. She put her arms around him, rubbing her cheek on his. "I'm your soulmate."
Jungkook hesitated then wrapped his arms around her. "I just want to be sure. This is something that is important to me," he said.
Mina pouted, but then put a smile on her face, knowing Jungkook wouldn't give in. "You should see the dress Y/N picked out for my party," she said, changing the subject. "I've never seen her wear something so sexy."
Jungkook pulled back and looked at her in confusion. "Y/N's coming to the party?" he asked.
Mina gave him a funny look. "Of course she is. She is my friend. Yoongi is coming with her," she said. "Too bad he's not her soulmate. They're so cute together!"
Jungkook made a face at that comment. Why does everyone keep saying that? he said to himself. First Taehyung and now Mina. Even Jimin had mentioned it when they had hung out. Of course after saying, he wished he were her soulmate. Jungkook had rolled his eyes, but deep down he sensed some truth to that statement.
According to Hoseok, Y/N had grown extremely close with Yoongi and Jimin. She spent most of her time with the two of them. Hoseok had laughed as he recounted a night where he had joined Y/N, Yoongi and Jimin for a movie. When the movie was over, he had looked over and noticed Y/N, Yoongi, and Jimin asleep on the floor, arms and legs tangled around each other.
Jungkook couldn't control the flame of jealousy that had worked its way across his chest before clouding his vision with red. He couldn't stomach the thought of his beautiful best friend with the handsome pianist or the seductive dancer.
Mina pulled his attention back to her. "Jungkook Oppa I forgot my wallet in your car. I don't want to have to go back for it," she said, a pout on her face.
Jungkook sighed and pulled his wallet out of his pocket. He glanced at the total of the dress, his eyes momentarily widening in shock. He pulled his credit card out and passed it to the cashier. He would need to work extra hours in the clinic to pay for that dress. It was more than he spent on food in a month.
Mina gave him a sweet smile. "Oh Oppa! You're the sweetest boyfriend ever!" she said.
Jungkook gave her a tight smile and placed his wallet back in his pocket. He hadn't even started the extra hours and was already tired.
