(A.N: I wrote this fic back in September 2020 so if there's any events that's slightly off well now you know. Oh and this fic doesn't have covid in their universe. Also I am not a doctor nor a med student so everything that I wrote here is completely base from research. So there might be parts where it's kinda unrealistic, because I don't really know how it works. I'm sorry for that.)Sakusa Kiyoomi is known as one of the best doctors in Japan. There are almost no patients that he couldn't cure.
Almost all of the people looked at him highly. They honored him because of his wonderful talent. People would think he's perfect. From looks to talents, it would be indeed perfect, but there was something keeping them from saying so.
He's attitude. He's not that friendly. He's also straightforward, he never sugarcoat anything. Everything he says are only facts, no opinions.
"He's dead."
Or
"He have stage 3 cancer"
He's not the type to go around it, scratch his neck, or look around anywhere else just to say a bad news. And that was one of the things that are bothering his coworkers, they're scared that the guardians might faint because of this, so they often do the talking.
He never interacts with his patients. He only do his job and cure them, but no other words are exchanged or whatsoever, but he is kind enough to his coworkers, that's why they didn't understand why he was like that to his patients.
That was until a certain patient came. His guardian told him that he suddenly fainted while in practice. He diagnosed him and saw, this boy didn't have just any light fever. It was something more worse. Something he completely couldn't remember. He was confused. He had a disease, but what? He knows he studied this before, but with the lack of patients, he quickly forgot.
He diagnosed this patient using a combination of his medical history, his family's medical history, a detailed physical examination, and MRI scans and blood tests to rule out other disorders.
That's when he finally realized what disease this was..
Friedreich Ataxia.
Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system. Many symptoms of Ataxia mimic those of being drunk, such as slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination. These symptoms are caused by damage to the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating movement.
He asked the guardian some questions.
"Was he having difficulty in eating and swallowing this days? "
"Yes."
"Was he having difficulty in unbuttoning his shirt?"
"Yes."
"Was he having difficulty in writing?"
"Yes."
"Does he walk unsteadily and have high chances of stumbling?"
"Yes."
"Does his eyes seems to go back and forth? Regardless if this was voluntary or not?"
"I'm not really sure but there was this one time that yes, I saw him do that."
And there, it was confirmed. His patient named Miya Atsumu have Ataxia.
He gulped and clenched his hands. This was totally rare, and it scares him even though he doesn't let it show.
Life expectancy is generally shorter than normal for people with hereditary ataxia, although some people can live well into their 50s, 60s or beyond. In more severe cases, the condition can be fatal in childhood or early adulthood.
And there was one more thing about this disease that he was afraid of,
It currently have no cure.
He could do this. He'll make the cure then. He's one of the best doctors in Japan after all. He's sure he can make it happen. There's no way he's letting this patient die.
And so, he explained everything to his patient's guardian, his identical twin brother, Miya Osamu.
He was shocked of course. Everyone will be shocked in such a news. Sakusa heard him gasp for air as his lips instantly pierced into a straight line. He also saw how he held Atsumu's hand tightly.
He quickly excused himself and left the room, not knowing how to comfort a person. He didn't leave yet though. He stopped by the door and closed it, leaning onto it immediately after. He can hear Osamu's sobs faintly.
He needs to do this. He will surely cure him.
