As you followed Lewis into the motel room, you sighed as you watched him start packing his bag. You gave him a sorry look and he looked up.
"What?" You opened your mouth to say something but hesitated and shut it with a shake of your head. Lewis gave a agitated sigh and looked away for a second.
"What?" He paused, seeing the look in your eyes. "You heard him. He wants us out if here by sunset and that's what were gonna do." You frowned a bit.
"I know. I just-" You brought a hand to your mouth, fighting back the urge to cry. When you felt tears working their way to your eyes you ket you hand fall to your side, heavily. "I'm just sorry, okay?!"
Lewis looked up and furrowed his brows, glancing away. "I shouldn't have listened to Fuller and I sure as hell shouldn't have dragged Rusty into it. He almost killed that guy! Because of us! Because of me! I'm sorry I dragged you into this, Lewis. It's my fault we got into this!"
When you fell quiet, Lewis looked back at you. He paused on your face. He could see you were actually sorry. He let out a sigh and shook his head. "It's alright. I should have just told him no. I let you go into it, so, technically it's my fault too."
You looked away, covering your mouth again. You stood there a minute before you grabbed your bag off the floor. You threw it over your shoulder and headed to the door. "Let's just get out of here."
Lewis followed you to the car's trunk where you just threw your bags in. Fuller's had already been sitting in it. He was now leaning on one of the motel's columns. He stood straight as Lewis shut the trunk. You made your way to the car and climbed in the back seat.
Fuller paused as he looked at you, leaning down. "Hey, you alright?" You took a small breath and quickly wiped your eyes. "Yeah, don't worry about it." He nodded and climbed in the passenger's seat, closing the door.
Lewis stood outside for a minute before he too got in. He started the car and paused. "We need to pay?" Fuller shook his head. "Nah, paid last night." With that he nodded and pulled out quickly, tired squealing on the pavement.
"So much for Wyoming..." You muttered under your breath, leaning back against the seat and closing your eyes.
It was dark by the time you woke up. You still felt mentally exhausted but tried to shake the sleep off quickly. The headlights coming from the other side of the road were painful in your eyes. You rubbed them a bit and squinted into the windshield.
You were back on the highway. Lewis was still driving and Fuller was sleeping in the passenger's seat. You yawned at looked at Lewis. "Where are we?" He looked back and checked the mirror. "On our way to Colorado."
"Shit...what time is it?" Lewis raised his arm, checking his watch. "Its a quarter til 10." You nodded a bit and leaned back, shutting your eyes with a sigh again. "Hey, can we make a stop soon though?" Lewis nodded. "Yeah, there's a town not too far from here. We can stop there when we get gas."
You gave a slow nod and leaned back again. You took a deep breath as you wanted to fall asleep again. The silence in the car was surprisingly calming. It was nice to relax and catch up on some extra sleep. You were almost asleep too. It came out of nowhere.
"Candy Cane." Your eyes shot open wide and you sat up straight. Lewis looked back at you. Lewis reached over and hit Fuller, trying to wake him up. "Hey. Hey!" Fuller grumbled and lifted his head. "Wh- What?!"
"Hey Candy Cane." Fuller heard his voice and opened his eyes. His head slowly rose up and he stared down at the CB.
"Candy Cane?" Fuller sat up and looked between you and Lewis. "Oh jesus..." You scooted to the edge of your seat, resting your arms on the back of the front seat.
"Anybody out there know Candy Cane? And Mama's Boy? Bah bah, Black Sheep." Fuller slowly reached down to grab the mic of the CB. Lewis shook his head as he raised it and clicked the breaker. "What're you gonna say?" You shrugged and turned to Fuller.
"Hey, Russell. This is Black Sheep. Go to 23." With the cut-off, Fuller immediately turned the station to 23 and almost in exact time got a response. "Hey, Black Sheep." You could hear Rusty clearly give an an agitated sigh. "Do you know where I can find Candy Cane?" Fuller thought for a moment.
"Hey, uh, what is your deal? I mean seriously..." Lewis gave him a warning glance but Fuller didn't even acknowledge it. Rusty cane through again. You could here the impatience in his voice as he spoke. "I'm looking for Candy Cane."
"So...you've been driving around all day looking for a voice?"
"I think you can tell me where to find her." Lewis shook his head. "Don't start man-"
"Uh. I talked to Candy Cane about last night and she said that she's not interested." You turned immediately and shook your head. "No-!"
"She's not interested in you or your pink champagne." Rusty was clearly fed up with this now. "I need. To find. Candy Cane." You turned to Lewis, who was still shaking his head at Fuller. Fuller pushed it over the line then.
"You. Need. To find. A highly qualified psychiatrist, not a psychologist. You're gonna need some drugs. And you're gonna have to find a damn good lawyer because the cops are all over your ass!" Fuller ended it shaking his head, "God damnit!" Lewis quickly leaned over the seat, taking the CB mic from him. "Give it to me!"
You froze and looked at him. "What are you doing?!" He paused before he quickly pressed the button. "Hey, Rusty Nail, you hear this?" You were shocked. Lewis was dragging himself into this. "There is no Candy Cane! It was a joke! It was just a joke..." You were frozen as silence filled the air again.
"Apologize."
Fuller scoffed. "Right." Lewis turned to him. "Just do it." Fuller shook his head in disgust. "No way!" You leaned over to look right in his face. "Fuller, please, just do it!" He looked surprised. "You want me to be nice to him?!" You shook your head. "Yeah! Look, I'll do it!" Fuller looked away for a second before he clicked the mic.
"Listen here, you sick fuck." Your mouth dropped and Lewis's head shot in his direction. "You pathetic, lonely, walkie-talkie freakshow motherfucker. You're not getting anything from me. You know why? Because I have something more powerful than your psychosis. It's called a volume knob. And the only thing I have to do to make you go away is to turn it counterclockwise! You got that?! You copy that?!"
Lewis shut his eyes and laid his head on the steering wheel with a heavy sigh. You sat there with your mouth covered, staring at the CB.
"You know, Black Sheep. I could've sworn you said there was no Candy Cane." He paused, slightly confused.
"Yeah! There isn't!"
"Then what's she doing sitting between you and Mama's Boy?"
Fuller's face slowly fell as he turned and looked at you. Your eyes widened as you looked at him. Lewis reached up and checked the rearview mirror. You and Fuller both turned to look through the back window. There was only one set of headlights behind you.
