Chapter 4
-People around her were shocked at the yet another new development.
“How did you know about this?”
“She couldn’t hide it from me, she was my best friend. I knew her like the back of my hand, the first time it happened a day before his birthday. She wanted to buy him a gift hence we made a plan to visit the mall after our shift.” she stopped for a minute. Taking out her phone she scrolled through her gallery, finally clicked on a video… “She was so happy while choosing the gift that I had to capture the moment, look at her smile.” She spoke with quivering lips.
It was a short video of Ayra trying to select a piece of jewelry at a well-known jewelers shop for her husband.“Ayra, be quick woman! You’ve been looking at these rings for the past 10 minutes” Arzu said from behind the camera.
“Look at this one, how’s… Oh my God stop recording!” Ayra turned around to show her friend the ring in her hand but shrieked annoyingly as she saw herself being recorded.
Zeynep took the phone and stared at the video replaying it once again. She got unusually silent for few seconds and then snapped back to reality when the video ended. Giving the phone back she asked her to continue.
“We finally selected the ring she showed in this video and returned back to our respective homes. The next day she returned with bruises on her hand, that vile man hit her only because she was late from work. He didn’t even care about the fact that she got late because of the gift. Such things got more frequent, she wanted to escape from the hell but she didn’t want to be a shame for her parents.” She sniffed remembering the struggles her friend went through.
They discussed more about Ayra and her life, Zeynep discovered a lot about her from this friend which was a positive point for the case. After a while they were done and Arzu was about to leave.
“Can you please send us this video on our email?” She requested referring to video she saw earlier.“I will.”
-It was late at night, Zeynep finally returned home from a very mentally and physically tiring day at work, opening the front door with her spare key she silently entered the house not wanting to wake her parents up. As she reached the dining hall she saw both of them sitting immersed in a conversation.
Looking up at the clock she noticed the time it’s 12am! Ya Allah, I forgot to inform them about the possibility of returning late. She gasped at her blunder, the case kept her so busy throughout the day that she completely forgot about making a call at home.
“Amma, Baba why didn’t you sleep yet?” She asked after greeting them.
“It’s okay we were just talking about general stuff, how was your day at work?” Baba replied smiling at her. The always worrying child.
“Very tiring! How are you? I couldn’t even pick you up from the airport, I’m so sorry.” she apologized while hugging him.
“Don’t worry Zeynep, I already informed him about your work. Now tell me did you have dinner?” Her mother asked raising her eyes.
