Abena' s Pov
" Abena if you don't drag your body down here,I'm going to cancel this trip and send you to a government school around here"
My mom shouts and I wince. No way am i staying back in Ghana. My name is Rachael Abena Johnson. A Ghanaian.
After junior high, my parents decided to send me to New York to attend my high school. You could imagine how pleased I am.
Not that I didn't love Ghana but the government high schools were a sight to see. The food could get you sick in bed for about a day if you are someone who isn't used to such food.
I'm going to miss my friends but I have to start a new life soon.
" I'm coming mom" I reply and send my suitcase downstairs.
My brother, Kofi, just glares at me as he sees me carrying my suitcase.
" Instead of glaring, you could help " I shout and he chuckles. Another thing he learnt when he went to New York. I'm going to b staying with him there and God knows how he'll treat me.
You are probably wondering how are names came into being. In Ghana every day born has a name, whether boy or girl.
I was born on a Tuesday so I'm called Abena, my brother was born on a Friday so he's called Kofi. His English name is Ryan.
*************************
The drive to the airport is a quiet one. My mom and my dad kept one advising me on what to do and how to act. Your typical African parent.
They had already, given Kofi an earful for piercing his body and tattooing himself. He didn't even care.
I start to cry as my mom and Dad bid us farewell. Kofi holds me till we board the plane and he leaves me to my own thoughts.
My mind starts to drift. What if they don't like blacks. After all, racism hasn't been commonly wiped out or??. I decided to ask Kofi.
" Do you think they'll have a problem with my colour"
" Black is beautiful, Abena, we didn't choose to be this colour, just forget whoever decides to discriminate against you" he replies and my heart soars at his wise words. I smile and he laughs.
" I'm not that crazy like you think,I speak sense too" he says and I laugh.
********************
I wake up to see Kofi hovering over me. Shaking me." Whew! I thought you were dead" he says and I roll my eyes.
I look up to see a wonderful sight." You haven't seen the best part yet." He admits and we get down.
**************************
In less than fifteen minutes. Kofi's driver was sending us to his house. I roll my eyes at his fanciness. He was just 19 years, just two years older than me.When we get to the house ,he shows me to my room.
It is stocked with everything. A TV,mini fridge, and Gosh! Snacks.
After unpacking,I move downstairs to find Kofi making out with a girl. She's pretty though. But she is wearing a dress that could deem her as an outcast back in Ghana.
" Hey" I say. They scramble back and Kofi smirks at me.
" Ursula meet my little sister,Rachael" he says and holds her waist..
" Hi,Rachael I'm Ursula" she says and I smile at her.
What the hell goes on here.
