A few days later, Maggie jogged down the hallway with a smile. She approached her brother, who happened to be with his friends, and tugged on the back of his new Varsity jacket. "Scott, hey," She waved, making her way to the middle of the group.
"What do ya want, Mags?" Rick asked.
"Yeah, you've clearly forgotten which side you're on." Cole added.
"Leave her alone, guys." Scooter answered, bringing a hand to his sister's back and walked off with her. "I'll be right back."
"Don't say anything." Cole said and Rick hit the boy's chest, shaking his head.
Scooter wandered down the hallway with his sister, making sure she was far enough away from the guys before he spoke up.
They were plotting something against JV and didn't need Maggie hearing because she would ruin it on them. It was another reason why Adam banks wasn't aware of the real plan behind their dinner on Friday night. Varsity had it out for the Ducks and wanted all of them out of the school, the faster they got rid of them, the better.
Maggie didn't know if it, but she knew of the now ongoing back and forth pranks between both teams. Dwayne had explained to her that nothing seemed to be going smoothly between the two teams. He mentioned a few things to her and Maggie understood the tension better.
Far enough away, Scooter brought both hands to his sister shoulders, who kept her hands low that held the piece of paper in hand on her exam score. She was proud to show him because he'd been helping her, which got her the good grade because of it. "Maggie, look, I know the JV team seems like a bunch of nice kids, but don't get too close with them."
She furrowed her brows, looking into his eyes. "What do you mean? How come?"
"I can't say, but they wont' be here much longer." He told her.
"What're you guys doing?" She pushed his hands off her. "You can't ruin it for them."
"Maggie, I-"
"No." She shook her head, not wanting to continue or step closer. "They're the only people I know who aren't like us. They're real people who've done everything to get here, why are you doing this to them now?"
"It's not just me." He sighed, looking her in the eye sincerely. "It's all of us. Aren't sad Danny didn't keep his spot?"
She nodded. "I am, but if he lost it to kids who were better, than I'm sorry. Besides, I'm starting to like them."
"I've noticed." He chuckled. "Just, be careful. If you keep quiet, then I will and Varsity won't know. Hmm, deal?" He brought his hand out for her to shake.
She debated. She wasn't mad at her brother, she was upset he would even think about ruining people's lives at school. Maggie knew Scooter was kind kid because their parents raised them well and she knew sometimes Rick and Cole weren't the best of friends, not for him, nor for her as influences. However, Maggie had friends like Rick and Cole, too. It was simply how she or Scooter dealt with people like that.
"All right." He brought her hand to his and shook it firmly. "Don't make me tell mom."
"She'll kick my ass, I know." He laughed and she did too. "What's that?" He points to her paper.
"Nothing." She shook her head. "It's absolutely nothing." She nodded, sure of her answer.
He stood up straight with a nod, patting her shoulder before he walked off back to the boys. Maggie turned around and jogged down the hall, passing by the Varsity team. Rick staring at her and she ran into a few students, causing books to fall, kids to shout, and teachers to question what happened.
Maggie helped clean up the papers before she continued for her locker.
At lunch that day, she met with Neveah and took her seat at the Ducks' table. She seated herself beside Neveah with Julie in front of her, as well as Goldberg and Averman, with Ken to her other side.
Charlie sat at the far end, watching the two girls welcome themselves into his group of players. No one else minded, even Fulton found himself accepting those girls, but hated the people they surrounded themselves with.
Varsity hated them and they hated Varsity. It was a rebound of pranks and today, Varsity believes they could get the last laugh.
"You two grew up here?" Julie asked, snapping a celery stick in half.
Neveah nods and Maggie awaits her friend's answer. "Yep, best friends since forever." She smiled, pulling Maggie into a hug, who smiled as well.
"We do everything together. What about you guys?"
Goldberg nodded, shoving a piece of bread into his mouth. "Most of us since grade school." Averman spoke since Goldberg was busy.
"Since the Junior Games." Julie added, pointing over to Ken and then the boys.
"Have you seen any of the games?" Ken asked.
The girls nodded. "I watched like one game." Neveah answered.
"Me too." Maggie smiled. "That's how I remembered who you were the day Dean congratulated you guys here." She mentioned. "Of course, I was late that day."
"That was you?" Julie smiled, remembering who she was now and Ken nods, pointing to her as he too remember.
"Look at the fancy new jackets, Guys." Russ laughed at the far end.
"Hey, congrats on the Blake game." Rick approached.
Maggie and Neveah looked to one another quietly, wondering what they were doing. Charlie glanced down the line of chairs to spot the two girls, which Varsity had then noticed. Charlie wasn't sure if those two had something to do with it or not, but they were here.
"Yeah right. We tied." Charlie sighed.
"Hey, a point's a point." Rick said. "You guys proved your guts. We're all Warriors now." He cut himself short. "Mags, Nev." He looked over to the girls. "Mind butting out for a minute."
"Yes." Neveah answered. "I do." She spat.
Maggie laughed, but kept quiet.
"All right." He looked back to team. "You guys all set for dinner Friday?"
"Dinner?" Russ raised his brows, looking at them dumbfound.
"It's an Eden Hall tradition. Varsity gotta treat the Freshmen to dinner. So, round up your posse and meet us the six. At the Minnesota Club downtown. Anybody need a ride, we can take you."
The Ducks began to speak up, thrilled about dinner at a fancy place. Charlie even seemed interested in this suddenly, which got him wondering if those two girls were going to be there. Surely they wouldn't, they weren't on either hockey team.
With that, Rick finished up and Cole had taken, a scoff came from some of them at his terrible speech and none of them really cared for Adam's sake when he approached, but listened anyhow. When they'd gone, everyone returned to their meals and ate quietly.
The far end where the two new girls sat was louder than Charlie's end, whom stared at them still.
