"What is it?" I say sighing to the phone as I excuse myself from the Applebee's table.
I am still upset about the dress choice. Actually I am upset about the maid of honor choice, and the rest of the night, since I got the news, has been awkward.
My mom thinks I am at the age to be listening in on how great of a kisser and whatnot her boyfriend--- fiance, is and to be honest I don't think I will ever get that far. Her friends giggle and gasp appropriately though. It was halfway through the meal when I realized that highschool really doesn't end at age eighteen.
Well atleast I can look forward to my seventies.
"Why so overjoyed to hear my voice?" he sarcastically asks.
Jessie.
"Why are you calling me at this time of night?" I ask him even though it's only seven thirty.
"Just making sure I had the right number," he says, "and I'm bored."
I start thinking up excuses to hang up, then realize this would probably be a good excuse to be away from the squealing for a while.
I mouth, "Biology. This is important," to my mom and go outside to sit on the benches for people waiting for tables.
"Bored on a friday?" I ask, "You don't seem like the type to be staying in on the weekend."
He sighs, "I'm not. I had set time apart so that my biology partner and I could do a project together, but she bailed on me, so I finished it by myself"
A tiny bit of unexplained guilt hits me, but I brush it off, "Poor Jessie, got stood up by a girl? How does it feel to have your pride tested for once?" I tease.
"Actually it isn't the first time," he says and I remember why I definetely should not have said that, it wasn't too long ago that Sidney hurt his pride and trust when she cheated on him with one of his good friends.
"Wow I am an idiot. Sorry," I say.
"What?" he says, playing it off, "I can't even remember."
"So I did all of the assignments due monday so do you want to come over sunday afternoon and we will trade?" I ask trying to change the subject.
Mom is taking the maid of honor to get facials. Funny how the whole time she was scheduling the weekend with me, I thought that it was going to be me getting the facial.
"Already inviting me into your house? Should I be flattered or worried?" He asks.
"Worried," I say plainly.
Four women come out of the restaurant, "I have to go. Saturday though?"
"It's a date."
"It's an appointment," I correct him.
"Wow. You are on a roll tonight Elizabeth," he laughs.
"I'm never not on a roll," I say dumbly because for some reason a high of elation hit me when he said my full name.
"Noted," he laughs.
"Bye," I say.
"No you hang up first," Jessie jokes.
I hang up.
My phone beeps immedietly with Jessie's number on the screen---
That was disappointing.
"Who was that?" My mom's ratchet maid of honor asks.
"Just my biology partner," I say.
"Didn't sound like 'just' a biology partner to me," she says in a, I know better, kind of way.
