"Come in, honey." Aunt Mamrie says, her face etched with concern. She ushers me into her house and I begin try to calm down. Mamrie pulls out one of the stools at her breakfast bar and I sit down. "I'll make tea"
"Thank you, Aunt Mamrie." I mumble, watching Mamrie's face glow as I call her aunt. She's always loved hearing me say that, and I've never known why.
"So, what's the deal?" Aunt Mamrie questions, setting a steaming mug of tea in front of me.
"Well," I start. "I went to a party. My first high school party."
"You didn't do drugs, did you?" Mamrie exclaims.
"No, no. Nothing like that." I assure her quickly.
"Okay. Continue." Aunt Mamrie says.
"Some of the kids were downstairs playing spin the bottle and Maggie and I went down and played as well. The bottle landed on me and this girl from my English class, Blaire. And-and we kissed." I explain in a hushed voice, tears glazing my eyes over.
Aunt Mamrie replies, "Just because you've kissed one girl, that doesn't make you gay sweetheart. I've kissed a girl before, hell I've kissed your mom before, and I'm straight as a ruler."
"I liked it, Aunt Mamrie. I liked it." I whisper, tears sliding down my cheeks.
Mamrie comes around the bar and embraces me tightly, enveloping me in a warm, safe hug. She rubs my back to calm me, letting me sob against the fabric of her shirt.
"Soph, there's nothing wrong with liking girls." Aunt Mamrie murmurs.
"I know, I know. I don't have a problem with gay people, or lesbians or bisexuals for that matter." I say quietly. "I just never thought I'd be one."
Aunt Mamrie places a hand on each of my shoulders and looks me square in the face. She studies me for a minute, and then kisses my forehead.
"It's hard. I've had plenty of friends who felt the exact same way as you do. If you like guys, that's cool. If you like girls, that's cool too. Even if you like both, that's totally okay with me. Don't sweat it little miss." Aunt Mamrie tells me.
"I don't like guys. The only boyfriend I had I pulled away when he tried to kiss me, because the thought of it disgusted me. I assumed I wasn't ready for kissing anyone. But Blaire made it seem natural, she made it seem enjoyable." I remark.
Mamrie smiles and goes, "Wave that rainbow flag high, Soph. Gay pride it up!"
I laugh, but repsond with, "Please don't tell my mom or dad, or anyone else. I need some time to figure stuff out."
Aunt Mamrie nods, hugging me again. "Did you leave Maggie at the party?"
"Yeah, I did. I'm sorry." I apologize guiltily.
"I'll call Hannah and tell her you went home sick, and then I'll drive you home myself. Don't worry about anything, hun. You're secret is safe with me." Aunt Mamrie promises.
"Thank you, for everything." I tell her, giving a weak smile.
"I'm to happy to help, little miss. Anytime you need, give me a call." Mamrie reminds me.
