BEFORE YULE

BANDIT

Classes have officially ended at Quarta Luna. Students that aren't returning home for the holiday are staying here on campus where they'll spend their time celebrating Yule with professors who have no family left and other students who are staying behind. Bandit and Bones made a pact that they're not leaving the academy until they can take care of the whole Betsy mess. Their parents won't mind. Apparently Mrs. Thorne hasn't even started decorating yet and Yule is in just two days. Bandit could see her worry when she called her parents through the mirror yesterday to inform them she and Bo will be coming late. They seemed relieved to have enough time to throw up the garland and wreaths and quickly decorate the tree as nicely as they possibly can. Bones is weird about the tree's perfection.

"Okay, we need to figure something out." Bandit tells the others in Nina's dorm on Saturday afternoon. The rest of her coven is spread out throughout the room as Nina smashes clothes into her suitcase, preparing to return home for the next few weeks. "Edison told me that Betsy is on the hunt for her baby, whatever that means."

"Maybe the baby she's talking about was kidnapped." Scarlet is seated on Nina's roommate's empty bed, all of her stuff already missing. Looks like someone might not be returning after the break. "If she's desperately trying to look for it, maybe she thought the kid was here at Quarta Luna."

"But I don't get the whole game thing." Riley is helping Nina fish clothes out of the bureau, Jade gently packing away Nina's altar tools.

"Yeah, why force the kids to play Mother May I?" Nina chimes in.

"She's a schizophrenic." Bones reminds them, leaning against the wardrobe as he clinks his rings together. "We don't really know why she does the things that she does."

"I can't believe you two are staying here longer than you have to." Ephraim shakes his head in disbelief from the floor, his eyes flickering from twin to twin. "You do realize you're insane, right? With only a few professors being here and the lack of students, you two will become bigger targets."

"The woman is in limbo." Bandit reminds him. "There's not much harm she can do."

"I'll stay with you guys." Scarlet volunteers.

"All right, and I thought I went crazy for awhile." Jade mumbles low enough for only Bandit to hear.

"Sebastian has to work his shifts at the skating rink so it's not like I'll be doing anything for the next few nights anyway." Scarlet shrugs a shoulder.

"Me too." Minx pipes up, digging through the contents beneath Nina's bed, yanking out pairs of shoes and bundled socks. "Nate's house on campus is our only place right now so I will be here all break. I could use something to think about to pass the time until school starts back up."

"That seance for your mother wasn't enough?" Jade glances at her over her shoulder.

"We need to figure something out." Bandit announces again, louder this time. "As crazy as Betsy may be, I do feel bad for her. She lost her mind and was desperate for a child. And then she killed herself. It's tragic."

"You're right." Riley agrees, her eyes glued to the floor with a sad glaze over them. "She needs to be let go just as much as the kids."

"Which we still need to find Ephraim's dad for." Nina points a finger at her and then looks down at Ephraim, who's resting his head against the wall. "Any word in that department?"

"I've been doing locator spell after locator spell. He seems to be moving around a lot." Ephraim sounds tired, gently knocking the back of his head against the wall he's leaning against. "It's like he knows I'm trying to track him."
