EPHRAIM
On Wednesday morning, Ephraim opens the door to his mom's house on campus, stomping off the snow from his boots on his way in off the porch. He quietly shuts it behind him, hoping to not wake Faith if she's still asleep-- which he's crossing his fingers for. He doesn't want to face her after their last discussion about their kiss the other day. Ephraim is under the impression that they are somehow linked in another past life, it's the only thing that makes sense. Maybe he was straight and got together with Faith however many years ago. Perhaps that's why they seem to bond so easily now.
Ephraim climbs the stairs to the second floor, nearly colliding with Faith as she comes swooping out of her room, yelping in the process. She dramatically stumbles backward, as if someone had just pushed her over.
"Whoa, you okay?" Ephraim reaches out to catch her arm.
"Ephraim, you scared me!" Faith has a hand to her chest and she's sputtering out a laugh that's a little hard to listen to. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in class?"
"I was looking for my mom." Ephraim glances down the hall at his mother's shut bedroom door. He knows that his mom has books on everything everywhere. He wants to read about past lives and if there's a way that he can use a spell to find out who he was back then. It's a stretch, but what does he have to lose? "Is she here?"
"No, she left about ten minutes ago, I believe." Faith answers as she moves past him down the creaky steps. "If there's something I can help you with, I'd be glad to assist."
"I was just looking for a book that I remember her having." Ephraim shrugs a shoulder, deciding he'll come back later for it before dinner or something.
"I was actually hoping we could speak." Faith says over her shoulder on her way into the kitchen, pouring herself a large cup of coffee. "I've been hoping you would come home sooner or later."
"What is it?" Ephraim impatiently checks the time on the grandfather clock ticking away in the cramped living room. He knows she's watching him-- which is the point. He wants her to see him that he's kind of in a hurry and doesn't have time to stand around and chat. Some people have class.
"I want to spend time with you tonight." Faith says hopefully, hugging the black mug with her hands. "Your mother said I could go out for a little bit after dinner. Would that be something you'd be interested in?"
Ephraim blinks. Oh, God. What if this is her way of asking him on a date when not actually telling him that it's a date? What if she thinks they're going to be dinner and flowers and another mistaken kiss at the end of the night like she's been watching on all the movies she's missed out on all these years? "What would you want to do?"
"I really want to take a canoe out on the lake before it freezes." Faith suggests excitedly. "That lake was more like a swamp when I was a student here so we never could take a boat out there or anything. Would that be something you'd be interested in?"
Ephraim forces a smile onto his face. He would feel bad if he said no. The girl's been dead for over a century and all she wants to do is get out of this little house that she's been tucked away in since being brought back from Hell. He doesn't entirely blame her. And plus, she did tell him that he's the only one she truly feels comfortable with out of the others, including Bones. "Okay, fine. We will take a canoe across the pond."
"Oh, hooray!" Faith dashes over to Ephraim, her smile wrapped around her head. "How exciting." Her breath smells like coffee as she slaps a kiss on Ephraim's cheek, hurrying upstairs.
Ephraim remains where he is in the kitchen, wondering if he can think of a good enough excuse not to go later.
