"I hope y'all cleared this weekend up like I told you to last week," Aunt Yvonne announced, striding into the kitchen, "because we're going to hammer out this baby shower thing today."
"Aunt Yvonne," I bit back a yawn, stretching my arms above my head, "don't you think it's too early to start planning your baby shower?"
"Nope." She planted herself on the barstool beside me, breaking off my last piece of toast for herself.
I raised an eyebrow at Ma, and heaving a big sigh, she stopped wiping down the counter and dropped her washcloth off to the side.
"Yvonne," Ma slid a plate of toast across the counter to her, walking around to take up the last barstool beside Aunt Yvonne. "You don't think it's unusual that you're planning your own baby shower?"
"No...?" Aunt Yvonne noted, spreading her gross combination of butter, jam and peanut butter on her toast. "Because planning the baby shower myself just means that--"
Her groan of appreciation cut off her sentence, so I finished for her, "You have more control over things running smoothly."
I couldn't have rolled my eyes any harder when Ma broke off a piece of Aunt Yvonne's toast and looked at me over her head with a small smile and shrug.
"Aunt Yvonne, what Ma was tryna say is that it is tacky to plan your own baby shower.
"Tacky?" she repeated, her words muffled around her toast, turning to Ma for confirmation in the form of small nods and shoulders shaking as she fought to hold back her laugh.
I stood up, leaning down to whisper in her ear, "Like Devon's cargo shorts and dress shoe combo at the cookout last summer."
Laughing, I jumped away from her swinging arm and her outburst of my name. "Adelaide!"
"Which is why"--I took out my phone, and pulled up my notes app to the baby shower plans Ma and I had already begun working on-- "Ma and I will officially be taking over baby shower duties like originally planned."
Aunt Yvonne whipped her head over to Ma. "Nells--"
Ma shrugged, raising her glass of orange juice to her lips. "Her plan is like four months in the making. Been looking towards it since you announced your pregnancy."
Aunt Yvonne clapped her hands together, dusting off the crumbs of toast left behind. "Fine, hit me."
"First order of business," I announced, smiling, "what alcohol will we"--they both raised an eyebrow simultaneously--"y'all, duh, be drinking. I was thinking fun baby-themed cocktails for everyone and mocktails for anyone pregnant or underage."
