Chapter 3
I wake up the next morning to the smell of bacon frying and can hear people talking downstairs. Getting up, I pull my hair into a bun and head downstairs. Walking into the kitchen I see Bonnie and Caroline cooking while Stefan, Matt and Jeremy are all sitting around talking. "Good morning." I say and they all turn around to greet me. "Good morning Sis." Bonnie says. "Need any help?" I asked and she says "Nope. Sit. We got this." God I missed her. Once breakfast was done, we ate and joked around and I got to know them a little more. I noticed that Elena and Damon aren't here but don't ask. It's not my business.
"What are the plans for today?" Bonnie asked and Jeremy speaks up, "Now that you're back, I get you for the day. We have some catching up to do." Bonnie smiles at him and it warms my heart that she is happy. "What about you Kali?" Caroline asked. "I think I might just hang out. Still a little tired. I might venture out tomorrow." I tell them and they all nod. "Want some company?" I hear behind me and turn to see Damon. "No, that's okay." I tell him and Bonnie and Caroline look at me confused. I just shake my head that it's nothing. After breakfast, we clean up the kitchen and I head upstairs and sit on the bed with a book when Bonnie comes in.
"Talk." she tells me and I know she won't give up until I tell her. "Bonnie, there's been so much happen here lately." I tell her and put the book down. "Talk to me. We're sisters. You know you can tell me anything." she says concerned. "Well, you know I said there was nothing to go back home to? Well, Grammy passed about two months ago and the house she lived in is gone. She was behind on the mortgage so the bank took it. That guy I was dating didn't work out so there's nothing there." I tell her. "I'm sorry about Grammy but you know you can stay here right?" she asked. "I know but I don't think I will. I think I might leave out tonight. See where I land." I tell her and she says "Nope. You just got here. At least stay for a couple of weeks so that we can spend some time together." I look down at my hands and she asked "What are you not telling me?" I just shake my head and say, "Nothing. Just too much on my mind." I know she doesn't believe me but she leaves it alone.
A couple of hours later, I am sitting in the living room watching a movie when the door opens. "Hey Kali. How are you feeling?" Stefan asked. "I'm okay. Feeling a little better." I tell him. "Bonnie said you were staying a couple of weeks." he says. "Yeah. Just to catch up with her a little and then I am heading out." I tell him. "Heading back home?" he asked. "No. I don't have anything to go home to so I am just going to travel a little and see where I land." I explain. "Why don't you stay here?" he asked. "Stefan, I don't fit in here. But it's okay. I will find where I belong." I say and he is silent. "I think you fit in here just fine." he says before getting up and heading to the kitchen. I sigh, wishing that I could stay here but that's not the best idea seeing that I am falling for someone that is clearly taken.
That night, everyone is sitting around Bonnie's house and talking and drinking. I am drinking a little more than I normally would. We are all telling stories about growing up and they are telling me stories about each other and I am laughing so hard I am almost crying. There is music playing and I look at Bonnie as a song comes on that I have not heard in years. "Oh my God. Bonnie! You remember this song?" I asked. They all look at me funny when she covers her eyes and starts laughing. "What are we missing?" Caroline asked. "Jamie Pattenson. He had the biggest crush on Bonnie when we were younger. Her and Grams would come visit during the summer and he loved when she would visit. We would practice most of the evening but during the day we got to just be kids. One day, Jamie showed up with his boom box, like the movie Say Anything, and started blasting this song. Only thing is that it was two in the morning. He was twelve. Grams and Grammy almost beat that boy to get him out of our yard. He was so in love with her. But he was soooo horrible. He was mean to everyone but her and she wouldn't give him the time of day." I say. "From then on, if I didn't listen to what Grams and Grammy were teaching us she would threaten to lock me in a room with Jamie." Bonnie added and they all laughed. I looked up and noticed Damon watching me with a small smile on his face. "I need some air." I say and walk to the front door and sit on the front steps. Sitting there thinking about my next move, I hear the door open and close. Thinking it's Bonnie, I say "Sissy, I'm fine. Just got a little overheated." I look over to the person that sat next to me only to see it was Damon and not Bonnie. "Sorry, I thought you were Bonnie." I say. "What are you still doing out here?" he asked. "Just thinking. Trying to figure out my next move." I tell him. "Next move? You're not staying?" he asked. "No. I don't think so." I tell him, looking down at my hands. "Why not?" He asked. "Damon, I won't fit in here. It's better for me to see where I belong." I explain. "What makes you think you don't belong here?" he asked softly. "Damon, you guys are all amazing and have done nothing but make me feel welcome but I have to go. I promise it's for the better." I explain. "Better for who? You? Us?" he asked, looking at me. "Let me ask you something? Have you ever just felt so comfortable around someone and felt drawn to them but know that it's not right?" I asked. "Yeah. I have." he says. Before either of us could say anything else, Elena comes to the door, "I'm ready for bed Damon." she says. I look at him and whisper "You better go." he smiles but stands and heads inside with his girlfriend. Looks like I might head out tomorrow.
