Chapter 6

It was a long drive back to Mystic Falls and Bonnie is still sleeping in the backseat. I can't sleep so I decide to talk to Damon about something. "I know we are going to see where this goes, but Damon, I need to take this slow." I tell him. "That's fine. We will take this at whatever pace you want." He tells me. "It's just that, my last relationship didn't go so well and it's got me a little disbelieving." I tell him. "Disbelieving how?" he asked. "What I am about to tell you doesn't leave this car. The only ones that know about this are Bonnie and our grandmothers. When I was fourteen, we were in an accident. I ended up with a piece of rebar stabbed into my stomach and because of the damage, I can't have kids. The guy that I was with, when I told him that I couldn't have kids, he decided that I wasn't woman enough for him and left me." I tell him as tears fill my eyes. "Well, you know as a vampire, I can't get anyone pregnant anyway. So, you don't have to worry about that with me. That just means more time to concentrate on you." he tells me and I smile a little. "You wanted kids didn't you?" he asked. "I used to think I did but I think it's more of not being able to make the choice for myself anymore." I tell him and he seems to understand.

After a couple of more hours, we pull up at a hotel room and Damon gets us a room while Bonnie and I start getting our things out of the trunk. "Are you okay?" Bonnie asked me. "Yeah. Damon and I talked about things and we are going to see where this goes. He broke up with Elena. I told him I wanted to take it slow and he is okay with that." I tell her and she smiles. "You know Elena isn't going to make it easy for you. What are you going to do if he goes back to her?" she asked. "Then I will leave again. That's why I want to make it slow. I know he has some feelings for her and I don't want to commit to someone just to have them leave me. I have accepted the fact I will never find love. But at least I can let myself be fooled for a little while." I explain right before Damon walks up. "Got our room. Two beds. Let's get some rest." he says before he takes our bags from us and leads us to the room.

Once in the room, we all take showers and call it a night. Bonnie takes one bed and Damon and I take the other. Laying down, I lay with my back to him and he pulls me back against him and holds me. Before I fall asleep, I hear him whisper, "I will change your mind." I turn to him, confused. "I heard what you said to Bonnie. I will change your mind. You are worth it. Don't ever think that." he says before he kisses me softly. I snuggle in closer to him and fall asleep in his arms.

Waking up the next morning, we head back out onto the road. Damon picked up breakfast for us while we were getting things packed up. We were still a couple of hours from Mystic Falls. "Are you staying at Bonnie's?" Damon asked. "For now, yes." I tell him and I see Bonnie smile. We pull up in front of Bonnie's house and walk in the door and I am immediately tackled into a hug by Caroline. "I am so glad you are home. Don't ever leave us again." she says in a stern tone but with a smile. "I won't. I promise." I tell her. Matt comes up next, "Welcome home. We told you we didn't want you to go." he says and I smile, hugging him back. Jeremy is next. "Welcome back. You really didn't think we would let you stay away did you?" he asked and I laughed and said "Guess not." Stefan walks over and hugs me and says "You really staying?" I smile and nod my head yes. Elena is standing to the side with her arms crossed and turns her nose up and leaves the room. "I wonder what her problem is?" Caroline asked while rolling her eyes. Bonnie and Caroline pull me upstairs to help me unpack and Caroline closes the door. "Spill. What is going on with you and Damon?" she asked. "We are going to get to know each other and see where it goes. He broke up with Elena." I tell her. "I know I don't like Damon but if he can make you happy then I am all for it." she tells me. "What about Elena? I thought she was your best friend?" I asked, looking at both Bonnie and Caroline. "Look, she was with Stefan and it killed him when she left him for Damon. She seems to think that everything revolves around her. We all have things we are dealing with and seems like we are putting all of our problems aside to take care of her. It's exhausting." Caroline says.

There was a knock on the door, and Elena is standing there when Caroline opens the door. "Can I talk to you?" she asked. "Whatever you need to say can be said in front of us." Caroline says. "Fine. You know Damon is just going to come back to me. He always does so don't get too comfortable. He won't be yours long." She says before walking away. Maybe coming back was a bad idea.
