When we walked in the living room, Caleb was sitting on one of the couches with his head in his hands.
He looked up at us, I mean at me. He looked guilty and nervous but I didn't care this time.
Harvey sat down on the same couch as Caleb but on the other end, he was probably expecting me to sit next to him but I walked and sat on another couch instead.
"So?" I encouraged them to start.
"Clary, you need to understand that we had no other choice." Harvey said.
"Let's start with why we're doing this." Caleb said when I didn't respond to Harvey.
"Do you remember the picture you were asking about in mine and Harvey's room upstairs? The third boy whom we said had left town. Well that's not true, he's in jail for a crime he didn't commit." Caleb continued.
"Wait, what crime?" I asked.
"We're getting to that part." Harvey said.
"Let's start from the beginning. So, Harvey, Jake and I have always loved going to Xavier's. This time when we went there, a new waitress was working, Derrina. She was almost 3 years older than us. We immediately became friends with her, more than we should've. We used to hang out a lot. We knew that she didn't have a family so she moved here and was working at the diner to pay her bills. She wasn't a good person and used to steal here and there but we didn't care." Caleb paused for Harvey to continue.
"That's where Ethan comes in. You see, he rarely visits us but he found Derrina interesting so he came here for her and started hanging out with us or with her alone sometimes, still hating me. They hooked up a couple of times. Ethan lost his interest just as quickly as he found it but Derrina fell in love with him."
Poor girl. I know how it feels when the person you trust and maybe even love ends up lying to you. Or do I? Why would I think that? When I know I wasn't talking about Ethan.
"Okay, then Ethan ended things with Derrina and went back home for an important meeting. He said he would come back in a few days and Derrina could talk to her then because the girl wouldn't have let him go." He continued.
"So two days after Ethan had left, Derrina called Harvey while the three of us were at his place. She said that she was in trouble and needed help and texted us an address. We went there only to find out that Derrina had shot someone while attempting to rob their house. We didn't know she was capable of doing something like that. We refused to help at first, obviously. But she convinced us that she had no idea what she was thinking and if we helped her, she would immediately leave town without anyone knowing. We don't know why but we did help her, we actually considered her a friend and now we accept it was the most stupid decision ever." Caleb explained.
"I took care of the gun, Caleb booked her a ticket for leaving town that night and Jake was supposed to take care of the body and the CCTV footage. So me and Caleb left to do our parts whereas Jake was still there with Derrina. He gave the footage to Derrina as soon as he got it but she tricked him and called the cops. We didn't find out what happened just then. Caleb gave the ticket to Derrina and only found out about Jake when she had already left." Harvey explained further.
"So what exactly do the two of you plan to do now? I'm certain Derrina has no plans to come back here and give you the tape." I ask.
"That's exactly what we plan to do. Lure her here and then get her to give us the tape." Harvey said.
"You make it sound so easy. How're you exactly gonna 'lure her in'? Say that you miss your dear old friend?" I said sarcastically.
"That night, when Jake was arrested, Derrina didn't use Caleb's ticket. Now there could be two reasons to that, first, she changed her identity before she left, you know to leave no trail whatsoever and second, she wanted to see Ethan for one last time so she decided to wait a little bit longer. We really hoped it to be the second one. See, Ethan hates me. I don't like him either but he really really hates me because..." Harvey paused and looked at Caleb and then everywhere else except me as if contemplating whether to tell me or not.
"Because of the fact that I'm adopted. He would have gotten everything dad owns if they hadn't adopted me. He just hates me for that one reason." He paused to take some air probably.
*Flashback*
"Cousin brother. And didn't you notice? We don't exactly share the brotherly bond. He shouldn't even be a part of this family."
"What do you mean?" I asked confused.
"Nothing. Leave it." Ethan said and walked away.
*Flashback ends*
So that's what Ethan meant when he said that that Harvey shouldn't be part of the family.
