It had been a week since I had been to Emma's. We had barely seen each other at work just from both of us being busy with our own things. Hanna wouldn't get off my case about me going over there. No matter how many times I told her I was just over there for a few drinks and to go over something. Then I went back to the oval and was there until 3. I had fabricated this lie and told her it so many times I was starting to believe it myself. She always seemed to end up in the oval to discuss what had happened. James, Emma, and I had a meeting soon so I kicked Hanna out of the oval yet again. James walked in soon after Hanna left, but instead of Emma, it was some aid. Gabby I think was her name.
"Where's Emma?" I asked the girl. She looked to young to be working here, but so did Emma some days."I'm not sure, sir. She gave me this," her outstretched hand held a folder, "and told me to bring it to you. I think she had some other things to do."
With that, she walked out the door.
"I can't believe her. I suppose we will go over this and I will have to find out from Emma why she decided that whatever she was doing was better," Looking in James' direction. A simple nod was given by him. We made our way to our respected spots on the couches.
"If I could see the folder sir," James asked. I quickly handed it over to him. "Looks like a normal, not exciting day. Let me go see what is happening with Emma then I will come back and let you know."
"Yeah okay. I'll talk to you soon then."James
I quickly exited the oval and made my way to Emma's office. There were only a few places she would go.
"Emmaaaa," I said as I opened her door. "What are you doing in here."
"Well James, this is my office. So it seems like I'm working," she said as she set down her pen. "The better question might be what are you doing in here?"
"I just came to see why you missed our meeting with the president." I sat down in the chair across from her."
"Oh that, well you see James I am a very busy person and that meeting was nothing an aid couldn't handle."
"Well, Emma I am also a very busy person but I'm not sending aids to meetings with the president," She took a deep breath in and looked at me. I saw this look in her eyes. I don't think I had seen it since the trail, well after, after we had won, I told her that I see everything. I see them.
"James...""Emma what happened between you two. I know that look."
"I'm going to tell you something and you are to keep it between you and me. Can I trust you?"
"Yeah, Emma of course. Why wouldn't you be able to."
"Cause what I'm about to tell you is big. very. very. very big."
"Okay, Emma you're stressing me out."
"I made a mistake. A very big one."
"Jesus Emma just spit it out already."
"I slept with Jack!"Now I knew, I always have. I mean I had my speculations because who wouldn't if you saw what I saw but I never expected her to tell me. Jack, well I always expected him to tell me first. I am a little hurt that he didn't tell me first.
"Emma..."
"It was a week ago. He showed up at my door for drinks. Well, we didn't just have one, we defiantly had a few. I mean it shouldn't have happened the drinks, or the sleeping together. We didn't even mean to sleep together, I was going to make him stop but I couldn't. And I think Hanna knows. Well, Jack kind of told her, he had to because he didn't get back until three in the morning. So he told her that he came over for drinks, then he went back to the Oval to work on papers and stuff and all the late-night things he works on in the Oval. But I really don't think she believes it. I mean she keeps going into the oval and I can hear things. We all can but everyone ignores it. everyone knows they are only together to keep him president. But I know so much more I am the reason for so much more," I was having a hard time keeping up, I missed a few words here and there but I got the gist of it.
"Wow. Just wow. But Emma you can't avoid him. You work for him you have to see him literally every day. Just don't let it happen again if it's that bad-"
"Oh but it was so good," she gave a slight smile. I rolled my eyes at that comment.
"And Hanna doesn't know. Like you said she only has her suspicions. But Emma, this could ruin you or more importantly him. I still stay by what I told you after election day."
"Yeah, I know," her tone had changed, it had matched her expression when I came in. It had become sad and her head rested in her hands. I heard a slight sniff. I grabbed one of her hands from her head and held it in mine. I rubbed my thumb across the back of her hand. I took a deep breath and let out a sigh.
"Emma, it'll be okay. We can get through this together. I'll be here you know that." I change my tone to a low whisper. "You know I like you better than Hanna anyways," that received a small chuckle. "I told him I would figure out what you didn't come to the meeting. What do you want me to tell him?"
she used her free hand to wipe her eyes.
"Just that I was busy and could get out of or stop what I was doing."
"Okay. if you ever, and I mean ever, need anyone to talk to about this or anything. find me, or call me, text me. Heck write me a letter, seal it and leave it on my deck, just make sure it's sealed or someone that's a little nose will find it and we really really don't need that."
"Thank you, James. For everything."
"Of course honey," I gave her hand a small pat and head out to go lie to the president.
