The day after the races was super busy to say the least. John had decided it was best that Gwen move in with him and the kids. If they were going to make this family thing work, it was for the best. Gwen could not imagine being in a relationship and with child and living alone without her child's father. It would not be fair to John or his kids. Today was the day Gwen was moving in and her and John were delivering the news to the kids.John promised her she could keep her flat. It was the only thing she had ever owned or even the nicest gift she had ever received. Gwen found it quite silly to make a promise like that because she had no need to go back to an empty flat, but John insisted. Gwen shoved the last of her clothes in a bag as she moved it to the bottom of the stairs.
John had got together a few Peaky boys for help. Thankfully, it was not a far move it was literally just across the dirt filled street. Gwen did tell John they would eventually need somewhere bigger. A three bedroom flat with five kids was not ideal especially as they all got older. All Gwen's belongings were packed in a few boxes and bags. She never really had much just clothes, photos and a few odds and ends that made a home.
John stepped in the door wiping a few beads of sweat from his brow. "Is this the last of it then?" John asked. It was much like John to help even with hired help and it made Gwen smile.
"Yep that is all of it." Gwen smiled nervously. John handed the box to a man close by as he walked to comfort Gwen.
"What's wrong love?" John asked Gwen. He comforted her, pulling her close. His hands touched her stomach where John swore a bump was already existent. "We can't be stressing our boy out."
"It's just the kids." Gwen sighed.
"You know the kids. They have known you their whole lives. What is so scary about that?" John chuckled.
"I don't know John...I don't want them to think I am trying to take Martha's place." Gwen said nervously. John placed a kiss on her cheek as he rubbed the small of her back.
"They won't think that beautiful. They know no one will ever try and take their mummy's place. But that doesn't mean that can't love you. I know they adore you. Margaret is excited to have you around." John reassured her. Margaret was such a sweetheart. The eight-year-old carried a responsibility that most young girls her age didn't have to carry. She was like a sister and mini mommy all in one.
"Well, better now than never." Gwen smiled. If anything, she was going to go into this with a clear head.
John lead the way as he grabbed Gwen's hand in his. Gwen grabbed her coat as she put it on slowly and she shut the front door of her now empty flat. They walked slowly through the dirt filled streets of Watery Lane. Gwen got little smiles from the other woman as they walked past her. She was not sure if it was because they were being nice or because she was walking with John Shelby. Johns place was not too far from hers as the Shelby's always liked to be closer to one another. Or that is what she told herself anyways.
John reached in his deep pockets as he pulled out the key to the door. He shoved the key in the lock and turned the knob as he looked back at Gwen.
"Just relax. The kids are going to be bloody fucking excited. About you and the baby." John smiled.
He pulled Gwen in through the front door. The house was quiet for once. Gwen was sure in that moment John has preached to the kids to be on their best behavior. All Shelby kids were rowdy and wild, but they all had the biggest hearts. Especially if they were anything like John.
"Well...it is quiet." Gwen giggled. She took off her coat placing it on the nearby hook and took a seat on the couch. John took off his Peaky cap shoving it in his coat pocket as he placed his coat next to Gwen's.
