1:

I stared at the ground, my aviators covering my teary eyes. There was a chorus of Amens but I didn't join in. I didn't believe in God. I didn't believe that he was there to help us.

I couldn't rely on anything but myself to get me through these dangerous situations, it would only end in disaster and death.

Nick was a great guy. He was smart and quick to think. But he was a believer in God, and would always pray to have some sort of backup. I tried to explain to him that he needed to be independent, but he wouldn't listen.

That's why he's dead.

They started to lower his coffin into the grave. Family weeped for a son, brother and father that was taken away so suddenly. Our work was a secret, so to them he probably died in a car accident, or a freak explosion.

After the coffin was placed in the ground, I turned and walked away, mourning my partner for the very last time.

I walked inside the head of CIA, Washington DC. The lady behind the desk gave me a sad smile but I didn't return the gesture.

I took the stairs to the third floor and went straight into my office. It was quite large, with a long couch and coffee table situated in the middle, and a floor to ceiling window that ran across the back wall. It was one way, of course.

I sat down on the couch, a takeaway coffee in my hand. Nick's desk had been cleared of files and burned. So I was alone for who knows how long. Maybe I would prefer it this way.

It wasn't long before I heard a knock on the door.

"Come in." I shouted, and the door opened. In walked Kevin Smith. Head of CIA.

"Hello Amber." He greeted and I nodded in reply. He sat down on the couch across from me.

"Good morning Mr Smith." I returned the greeting.

"I am sorry about what happened to Agent Dowling." He told me and I kept a straight face.

"It is done and I have moved on." I replied simply and he seemed unfazed.

"I understand that you are now without a partner." He continued, "And it is best for our agents to have someone who they can ask for help or talk to about the mission."

"I don't need help, and I am perfectly fine working independently." I told him and he smiled,

"I am completely aware of that. But you and Agent Dowling were a great team. And anyway, two heads are better than one." Mr Smith said

"I don't believe that." I cut in, " I believe that being by yourself and independently working helps substantially with reliability."

"Well, after three years of you working here, you still seem to surprise me." He chuckles.

"What can I say, I am a woman of many talents." I say flatly and Mr Smith sighs.

"I'm sorry Agent Blackthorn but you will have a new partner in the span of two days." He says in a final tone. "Good day."

He stands and walks out of my office.

"Good day my arse." I mutter and down the rest of my coffee.
