Amber's POV

As Kevin spoke, my mind was elsewhere. I was worried about Harry, I didn't even know if he was injured or something had happened. This was my first actual chance to think clearly. They had me hooked up to machines only an hour earlier, trying to clear my body of the pain serum. Since then I was resting before Kevin demanded he talk to me.

"Are you even listening to me Amber?" His stern voice snapped me out of my little daze.

"Yes." I replied curtly, leaning back in my chair

Kevin clenched his jaw with annoyance. "You need to explain to me right now why you deserted the clear instructions of your mission, and got yourself in this bloody mess."

"I've told you this already, we found an important piece of information while we were investigating- which was part of the mission, by the way," He rolled his eyes, "And we had no choice but to act on it. Any further wait, and Ella would've been dead."

"That's not an acceptable enough excuse for going directly against us Agent Blackthorn." He crosses his arms over his chest with a tired look on his face

"Acceptable enough excuse?" I repeat his words, becoming frustrated, "Give me an example of an acceptable excuse then, Boss." His eyes narrow at my attitude but he pauses for thought

After a moment, he answers. "There wouldn't be any excuse for breaching the instructions."

"I was saving Ella's life! I was thinking about the damn country!" I stand, my voice gradually building to a yell

Kevin then stands slowly, "If you were thinking about the country, you would've followed the brief." His voice keeps stern and level but I can tell he is losing his patience with me

"Enough with this damn mission brief!" I yell, "I did what I had to, I practically saved a life!"

"Ella's life does not matter!" He leans over the desk towards me, "It was what was inside of her that did."

His words shocked me. "You would let an innocent die for no reason."

"Sacrifices are needed in order to save others."

"You're wrong. You couldn't give any less fucks about people dying." I shoot back at him

"Why do you suddenly care about everything so much?" He exclaims, still trying to control his anger

"Why is it suddenly so bad to care?"

"Because caring gets in the way of your job."

"So the reason I am so good at what I do is because I don't feel?" I click my tongue with annoyance

"No. the reason you are good at your job is because you are alone." I open my mouth to speak but he continues, "You are probably the most alone person in the country, and that is why you are good at your job. Your family was brutally murdered. You found them dead in your own house. You've been alone ever since. You have no connections to anyone, no one can threaten you with anything but your life, which doesn't even matter in the scheme of things. That's why, agent blackthorn. In fact, your family dying was probably the best thing that has happened to you. Them being dead made you who you are now, and brought you to the position you are in today."

"You're wrong. You're so fucking wrong." I take in a shaky breath, "Do you think I would not give up everything to go back and be with my fucking family. YOU DON'T KNOW A FUCKING THING ABOUT ME!" I yell. Fed up with him, I shove the chair out of my way and begin to walk away from him.

"Amber you better turn back around and sit down." He says sternly, but I continue to the door.

"Your parents would be exceptionally disappointed."
