Draco, Blaise, Harry, and Ginny stood at the gates of Malfoy Manor. The last time Harry had been here it hadn’t been a very pleasant visit and he knew this one wouldn’t be either. He turned at looked at Draco and Blaise who were quietly discussing the protection charms on the gates and grounds.
“I don’t think we should try to go through them, it’s too dangerous.” Blaise whispered eyeing Ginny and Harry. “We don’t need to risk their lives.”
“Then what do you suppose we do?!” Draco said slightly annoyed with his best mate. “There’s only one other way in but it takes at least 1 hour to go through it.”
“Well, that’s better than going through there and getting killed!” Blaise snapped waving his arm towards the massive gates.
“Fine! Bloody hell mate you can be a pain.” Draco whispered before turning to Harry and Ginny who were now standing before them with somewhat amused faces. “Follow me, there’s another way in, this is too dangerous and they’ll probably see us coming anyways. It’ll take a minimum of 1 hour to go the way we’re going but its better in the long run.”
Blaise snickered behind him and then followed as they began to move towards the hidden entrance. Blaise knew about the entrance but was told never to go in without a Malfoy present. It wasn’t as dangerous as going through the front yard but it still held dangers that only the Malfoy’s knew of.
Draco pulled back some bushes in the woods that lined the long deserted street they were on and waved his wand over a 3 foot section of ground. The others watched as a door appeared and Draco pulled it open to reveal a staircase descending into the ground.
Turning to face them Draco gave each of them a pointed look, “Stay close to me and do NOT stray. It’s dangerous going through here; it’s charmed to recognize me since I’m a Malfoy, so like I said, stay close because not even I know the consequences if you get to far away, I simply know that they are not pleasant in any way.”
Blaise, Harry, and Ginny nodded and gathered closely around Draco as they descended into the cold passageway. Ginny took a hold of Harry arm and reached over snatching Blaise’s hand, who looked rather shocked, as they crept further into the dark passage.
They came across a fork in the passage and Draco stopped. He looked to the left and then to the right looking deep in thought. His mother had told him a riddle to get through these passages safely.
“Draco, you know the way right?” Harry whispered as Draco closed his eyes trying to recall the riddle.
“Shut it Harry, I’m thinking.” He whispered back. “My mother told me a riddle that would get me through safely; the first part is….”
“When you descend down my steps
I will take you to a fork
Be careful what way you choose
Because left is not as right as it looks”
Blaise thought for a moment before speaking quietly, “So we go right?”
Draco nodded and started moving forward slowly. He kept his eyes peeled for any movement as they walked into the right side of the fork. “What was the next part of the riddle Draco?” Ginny asked softly from her position directly behind him.
“Once you walk past my lanterns
You'll find yourself with another decision to make
Do not avoid the straight and narrow
Because the other 2 are fake”
Ginny glanced around Draco and saw very dim lit lanterns lighting the path 10 feet in front of them. “Those must be the lanterns.” Harry whispered as they walked closer.
