The outside was wet with the thumping of rain, the frosty atmosphere not breaching the walls of the house, keeping us comfy as a hot pocket. The bell rang through the house; I was eating and there was no way I was going to interrupt my delicious cereal to make an active effort to get up off my seat and turn the knob on my door and then waste my precious energy to open it to reveal-

"Sirius?" What? I whipped my head around so fast that I slipped milk all over myself. The floor was made slippery with the forgotten liquid and I slid down onto the floor before hastily getting up to see a soaked Sirius standing at the door with a trunk an a backpack. His hair was let down and sticking to the back of his T-shirt as the water violently hit him and parted his sectioned hair. His eyes were puffy, a sight I had thankfully never seen in a long time but they indicated that he had been crying recently. "Oh dear, you must be freezing. Come in." She invited him in and took out her wand to dry him as fast as she could.

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to intrude but you guys always said I could come here when I wanted to and I didn't have anywhere else to go." I saw him spot me and look down guiltily for some reason while my Mum muttered a small 'oh hush, you're always welcome here dear', but I ignored his odd reaction and went to hug him as tightly as I could. He smiled against my shoulder and hugged me back. I let go and pat him on the shoulder. Meantime, Mum was done with the wand so I grabbed his bags and led him upstairs to the guest room.

"We have a guest room but I put a bed in my room for you two years ago so you'll be staying with me." The second he told me of his less-than-decent housing conditions -that I wasn't allowed to tell anyone about- I immediately told y parents -leaving out some details, very big details- and they allowed me to have a new bed in my room ready for him just in case, but I never thought he would go through with it, especially since he was worried about his brother.

"Thank you so much James." He was past his sniffling and sobbing and was sat on his bed with a resigned look on his face and his head in his hands.

"Do you wanna talk about it?" I asked cautiously, I didn't know whether it was too soon, but I wouldn't be hurt because I knew whatever it was would be something extreme and extremely traumatising.

"Not yet. It's just that she's been bad for a year now, worse than usual and I was quiet. But today I couldn't deal with it anymore, it just seemed worse and worse and I couldn't deal with another day in the house of Walburga Black." If I had the chance, I would honestly kill that woman. I would never tell him that but I definitely would.

"Okay, you wanna come down to get something to eat?"

"Could I just rest please? I'm really tired."

"Of course." He just curled up into small ball and fell asleep within seconds. It was then that I felt a new sense of protectiveness and security. I needed to ensure his safety and comfort from now on.

I was going to make sure he knew what it felt like to have a real family.
