Roman's POV:
Remus knew how to get to me. He knew my weaknesses better than anyone. And now that everyone else had escaped it was just me and him.
He was angry. Really angry. I wasn't going to get away from him easily.
"What's wrong, Ro?" Remus asked, taking a step forward intimidatingly. No, I wasn't supposed to show him I was nervous...
"What?" I asked, taking a step back. "N-Nothing's wrong..." Of course I was lying. My heart was in my throat as I breathed shallowly.
"Really?" Remus asked, giving a fake laugh. "Nothing's wrong at all?" He took a few more steps towards me as I continued backing away. Then he reached out unexpectedly, grabbing my collar and causing me to flinch. He smirked. "Then why are you trying to run?"I swallowed dryly and opened my mouth to reply, but Remus continued.
"Look at yourself, Roman." he said softly, standing inches from my face. I shrugged.
"Remus...you...you c-can't trick me anymore..." I muttered. He shrugged.
"Trick you? Oh, I don't need to trick you. You know with or without my help how worthless you are."
I breathed in deeply, trying to ignore him. "Stop.""Why? Am I bothering you?" He gripped my collar tighter. "I said you were gonna get it, I wasn't kidding."
No. No, I wasn't going to let him win this. He had no power over me. None. And everything he said was lies...
Using all the courage I had left, I breathed in shakily and pried Remus's hands from my collar. Remus put a hand over his chest.
"Oh? What's this? Maybe I underestimated you..." I started walking away towards the entrance back into the mind palace when Remus muttered behind me, "No...no, that's not it..." I kept walking, ignoring him.He didn't care.
"That's not courage...no...it's defiance. Defiance like you've always had." I kept walking.
"Defiance that gets you in trouble all the time with Thomas." Just ignore him.
"Defiance that makes you nothing but a burden for Thomas." Almost there.
"Defiance that means you're still a child."
I stopped...
Remus was probably smirking behind me at my sudden halt. He continued.
"The same weak, overweight, self-conscious freak I've been trying to fix my whole life."Tears started blurring my vision, but I ignored them and kept walking.
Lies. They were all lies.
Remus chuckled behind me in disbelief. "You think you can protect them. Roman, you're a child. You failed to protect them before..." He paused for effect. "What makes you think you can protect them now?"
That was too far.
Before I even knew what was happening, Remus's collar was in my grasp after I impulsively turned and grabbed him, bringing him close to my face.
"Now, you listen to me." I spat. "You can taunt me, tease me, hurt me, patronize me, mock me, lie to me all you want...but leave my family out of this."
He didn't look scared. He actually looked pleased. Like he knew this would happen. He started clapping.
"Well done, Roman." I dropped him, realizing it was a waste of my time. "You try to protect them, and you fail every time." I kept walking, nearly there now. "I'm not scared of you, Roman." he said smugly.I gripped the doorknob, pulling the door open and turned to face Remus one last time.
"Oh yeah?" Remus grabbed my wrist before I could close the door. He pulled it to himself and put his lips up to my ear."Now, you listen to me, Roman." He whispered.
"If you think this is over, you are far from the truth." I tried to pull away, and he forcefully pulled me closer. "I told you that you were gonna get it. I wasn't lying. I never lie to you." My heart slightly dropped at this statement as much as I didn't want to believe him. I was breathing shallowly now. I think he noticed..."You're right. I've gotten to you as many ways as I've been able to think up. I never actually asked you the easiest way to hurt you...and you've just told me."I swallowed again, not wanting to hear his next words. "You're greatest desire is to protect them, huh?" he asked, smirking. "Well...why not make that a little bit harder for you." He said this just before pushing me roughly back into the mind palace and slamming the door to the Imagination behind him. He shoved me so hard I fell back and hit the floor, the wind getting knocked out of me as I fell into Logan who was knelt over Patton.
Logan yelped. "What in the—" He turned around and met my frantic eyes. "Roman...oh my gosh, Roman, are you O—" and I leapt up, scrambling to my feet and unsheathing my sword as I grabbed the doorknob to the Imagination.
"REMUS!" I screamed, pulling the door open and staring wildly ahead. But ahead of me, there was nothing. Remus had left the Imagination...
With a promise to get revenge.
