This had to end. Lizzie was right, I didn't fix myself. I barely even started.
I picked up my phone, and texted Joey:
ME: I'm coming over. I gotta talk to you and clear things up.
After a minute, my phone said he read it, but didn't reply. I'm going anyway. I fumbled down the stairs and put on my old, black beanie. I slipped on my sweatshirt and began to open the front door. I turned around to see Cat about five feet behind me. Being the jumpy person I am, I screamed when I saw her. "Oh my God, you scared me," I nervously laughed. "You snuck up on me."
"Where are you going?" She interrogated, with Anna clung to her leg.
"I'm just gonna go and... See Joey," I gulped.
"Really? And you're not going with anyone incase something goes wrong?" She demanded. She seemed pretty upset I was going on my own without backup.
"No, I'm going with someone." I lied.
"Uh huh. And who might that be?"
"Anna," I replied instantly. "I mean, she is his daughter too, right? And he's gonna wanna meet her. I'm just gonna be there for a bit. I need to talk to him. And you're not gonna stop me."
"Okay, fine. But don't get into any trouble."
"Yeah, thanks, Mom," I joked while taking Anna's hand in mine. "C'mon, let's go see an old friend."
I closed the door behind me, and it suddenly became Twenty Questions with Anna. "Do I know him?"
"Technically, no. But he knows you," I answered.
"And he's a friend?"
"Um, you can say that."
"Why wouldn't he be? Why are you seeing someone you don't like?" Her curious eyes stared into mine.
"I need to set things right. Something happened one day, and we need to settle it." She nodded in response, even though she didn't really understand. At least the car ride was peaceful.
The moment I pulled into the driveway, I went into panic mode. My heart was beating rapidly, it felt as if it were to burst right then and there. Sweat beaded across my forehead and made my hands warm and clammy. I opened the car door, and slammed it behind me. Anna jumped out of the car, and hopped up the concrete staircase at my side. I pressed the doorbell button, and it rang so sharply, it sounded flat into the next note.
The door swung open, and there stood Joey. He looked me up and down with his emerald green eyes. They darted to Anna, and they lit up. His fingers ran through his unkempt hair, and he looked back at me. "Hello, Meghan."
I inhaled through my nose, then said, "Hi, Joey." I released the breath I took in.
He opened the wooden door wider, and motioned for me and Anna to come in. "Why'd you come?"
"I have to talk to you. I can't stand the constant memories and dreams taking over my head every second of each day. I want you to tell me your side of the story." I waited patiently for his response. Then I muttered out, "Please."
Joey sat down, and allowed me to as well. "Well," he began. "It isn't a day I particularly like to recall either. But okay, I'll do it." He closed his eyes, as if to image everything all over again. "Shane and I had just finished our collab. Coincidentally, it was a Shoey video just for fun. But then he turned to me, and said he had fun. I agreed, and then he said he really liked me. And I just kind of went along with it, 'cause I assumed he was only kidding, and turned the camera back on or something. Plus he was with Lisa, and I was with you. But that's when he grabbed me, and started kissing me. I was so surprised, it took me a moment to process everything, I tried pulling away... But then that's when you came in. And he started telling those lies about me, and well... You know the rest."
He gave me a sad look, then murmured, "You were gonna tell me you were pregnant?" I nodded, which took a lot of strength for such a simple action.
"And this is her. Our daughter," I squeezed her hand. "This is Anna Camarena."
"Hello," Joey beamed to her.
"H-hi," she stuttered nervously. "Who are you?"
"I'm your dad." Anna looked at me, with a mix of excitement, and uncertainty.
"So, he's really my daddy?" She asked. "I didn't even know I had a dad." My heart broke. She was such an innocent sweetheart, she really did deserve a father.
"It's so nice to finally see you, Anna," Joey enveloped her into a hug. She didn't hesitate to hug him back.
"Are we a family now?" She asked with a sad look.
"I-I'm not sure," I said, "things aren't going too well between me and Daddy."
"You haven't forgiven me? I thought you just did. Who made you want to come down here anyway?"
"Lizzie. She told me that in order to completely recover from what has happened, I had to see you. Then I have to accept everything that happened between us," I explained.
"Can I have a second chance? I'll be a good father or boyfriend, all I need is-" I didn't need to hear the rest of his sentence.
"I don't know what to do, Joey! I'm just confused..." I drifted off. I never thought that we would see each other to have a real conversation. I really hoped we wouldn't. What happened five years ago really did damage our relationship.
"I don't want to pressure you into anything," Joey sighed, "but I do love you. I always have. It didn't mean anything, it wasn't my fault... Meghan please. Hear me out." He pleaded. "I just wish things could become normal between us, Meghansan. Like they how they used to be."
I flinched at the sound of my old nickname. "I-I can't make up my mind now!" I snapped. "And don't call me that! Do you really expect me to just drop everything and forgive you? To call off my wedding? It's not that easy, Joey, everything can't work out how you want! Maybe I want to marry Lucas! Maybe I don't want you to raise Anna with me! Maybe I don't want to forgive you!" I slipped. I didn't mean to burst like that. It was just a result of me snapping under the heavily-weighted pressure.
Scared of my outburst, Anna grabbed Joey's hand. "Daddy, why is Mommy mad at you?" She tugged at his sleeve.
"She's been through a lot, Anna Sun." Joey pecked her forehead, then dried her tears.
"Don't call her that!" I yelled. I gave Joey a murderous glare. "Anna, you cannot call him Daddy, he is a bad person. Do you understand?" She weakly nodded, but only held onto his leg tighter.
"But what did he do?"
"He left me. He promised he would be there for me, and just threw me away like I was worthless. If you're not careful, he'll do the same with you. That's why he can't be your father. We're leaving now." That's when Joey broke. His deep green eyes grew sadder than I could ever imagine. The tears that poured down his face began to gleam in the sunlight flooding through the window.
I grabbed Anna's hand in mine, and pulled her away from Joey.
It was too late to apologize for what I had said. I didn't mean it. But I couldn't take it back. I yanked open the front door and paused, to rethink what I was about to say. I turned to Joey, and the next five words were enough to make him shatter.
"Maybe I don't love you."
I rushed out the door, dragging Anna behind me, and got into the car. I slammed the car door shut, and slid down the driveway.
I acted like such an awful person. A pang of guilt stabbed me like knife in my chest. Maybe I should go back and apologize... No, I can't take back what I did. The guilt suddenly got to me, causing the tears to come streaming down my face.
I quickly rubbed them with my sleeve to gain my vision back. When I looked up, I realized that we were on the wrong side of the road. A car was speeding around the corner towards us.
"Crap!" I yelled, and jerked the wheel to the side. My car spun around, so it was horizontal on the road. I didn't have enough time to get away.
"Anna!!" I screamed as loud as my lungs allowed. But that was the last thing I was able to say or do.
Because my world went black.
