New school year equals new me. After all the drama from last year between my best friend Ella and her boyfriend Mac, I am ready to put some time and effort into working on myself this year. I am only going to do things that benefit me and help me towards my goal of owning my own marketing business someday.

Okay, maybe I can start on this new me tomorrow because what I am about to do goes strictly against my new way of living. When my dad called yesterday and asked me to come over for dinner today I caved in and said yes. I have some guilt over ghosting him all spring and summer for what he did to Ella.

My dad happens to be the head coach for the football team here at MSU and in his crazy desire to win the nationals he told Ella, aka the sweetest person alive, that she was hurting Mac's, aka our starting QB,  chances of going pro and that she needed to break up with him.

Of course she did and they both were miserable for what felt like a small eternity but eventually when my fathers action came to light to me and Mariam, my other best friend, we shook some sense into her. The reunion of Ella and Mac was epic and they have been attached at the hip and been disgustingly happy ever since.

I am not bitter, I really am happy for my bestie but do they have to be so in love? I hoped it would cool down a bit after the honeymoon phase was over but it is only getting more intense for each month. I should be happy for them, at least I get to occupy Ella's single room in our dorm so I don't have to meet my roommate ever again since Ella was quick to move in with Mac and his two roommates in the campus apartments.

I take a deep breath and prepare myself for meeting my dad, I give the door a quick knock and then enter. I take a step in the house I grew up in and shout out my arrival so he will know I am here.

"Olivia sweetie, glad you could make it!" He comes rounding the corner. My dad does not impress anyone with his small size but he knows how to make up for that with his personality. That is the only reason he can tame a whole football team with a bunch of  defiant young adults.

"I stopped being 'sweetie' about ten years ago and you know it" I never liked him using that name. Ever since mom died right after my tenth birthday, I forbade him to use that name. It belongs to my mom and her alone.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side, come to the kitchen. I made your favorite, chicken noodles with extra vegetables" He turns from me and starts heading for the kitchen. I keep my jacket on and follow him.

"I am not staying for long, I just came to talk to you" he turns at my words and for a moment I think I see hurt flash in his eyes.

"What do you mean?"

"I am not here for dinner, I just came to talk to you" he collects himself and responds with a "about what?".

"I am the new marketing student who is going to follow the team this year. I need you to not make a thing out of it and definitely not let the team know about our relationship" His shoulders slump at my words. It has always been a touchy subject between the two of us talking about his coaching and me being his daughter, I have always hated when the team at my school knew that.

"Do you want me to lie about you being my daughter?" he asks with hurt in his eyes.

"You don't have to lie about it, just never tell anyone that piece of information, that's the least you can do after your fuck up last year" he flinches at my words.

"How many times do I have to apologize about that? I never meant to hurt anyone..."

"I am not interested in your sorry explanations. Just keep out of my business, I am sick of being 'the coach's daughter' and it is not going to be hanging over my head all year, the boys will treat me differently and my grade will suffer from it" my academic achievements have always been important to my dad so me bringing it up hits right home.
