I look down on my phone and reread the text yet again.
Unknown: heads up, Ella is on her way. There's this team dinner tonight and everyone is bringing their partner. She is heading over to your place to get ready together /Dax
I have probably read it like five times now just to be sure I read correctly.
Me: What team dinner? and why am I hearing about it this late? and how did you get my number?
Unknown: sry for late notice, found out myself about ten minutes ago. Had to ask ella for your number
I hear a knock on the door and suspect that it's Ella. I call out for her to come in as I type up a quick text to Dax.
Me: ok, you're off the hook this time, guess I will see u later..
The boyfriend: have fun whatever girlie stuff you are doing
"You know, I never thought Dax was this cute, lovey dovey person but when he asked me for your number after he rebooted his phone, he said he had to make sure you were okay since he hasn't seen you the last four days" she looks at me with big hearts in her eyes. It is of course stupid of us that we haven't exchanged numbers before, our story is we got together this summer so I am happy Dax managed to make such a good cover story to why he didn't have my number.
"Yeah, that's Dax" is all I say and it seems to be enough as she starts talking about the dinner tonight. Apparently Ella is ecstatic over this and I don't understand why, she sees most of the boys almost everyday but I let her be.
After a good shower, some light makeup and a high ponytail paired with my favorite black tight jeans and a dark blue tight top, which shows just enough of my cleavage, we head out to meet the boys. We are walking together to the restaurant and will meet the rest of the team there.
I spot Dax before he has noticed us. He is wearing dark pants with a light blue button down shirt with his arm sleeves rolled up. I have to admit that he looks good and I take advantage of the fact that they have not noticed us yet and allow myself one more time of checking him out.
When we open the door to the entrance they finally spot us and Mac whistles appreciating at Ella and she jumps into his arms, giving him a kiss. I look at Dax who stands frozen with wide eyes beside Mac. I walk over to him and give him a quick peck on the cheek but he doesn't move a muscle.
"What's the matter?" I ask him.
"Ehm.. are you going to wear that? No, wait.. I mean, you look smoking hot" he says and I can feel his eyes looking me over, leaving a trail of heat everywhere.
"Thanks, you don't look so bad yourself" I say and hook my arm in his. Ella and Mac take the lead and we walk in silence behind them until we reach the restaurant. Dax removes his arm from mine and I mourn the loss of his warmth against me but he takes my hand in his again and leads me in.
The whole evening goes fabolous, I pull Dax with me wherever I want and get to know his teammates better. I have talked to them when working on my assignment but since this is a much intimate setting it is easier to ask questions of a more personal character.
For example, I did not know that our back up quarterback, Willis, has a two year old daughter or that one of the D-men is married. I feel much more invested now that I know more than just their stats and number. Many of the guys praised me for the pictures and told me how 'sick' they thought the posts and buzz we were getting thanks to my work.
Dax was by my side the whole time, smiling proudly like a dutiful boyfriend. Some of the guys even called him whipped a few times but they quickly learned that I have no problem dishing it out. I don't know if Dax appreciated me stepping in and defending him but I don't care. That's just the way I am, I have never been a good, silent bystander, instead I always have to add my thoughts on everything.
