All lessons were suspended, all examinations postponed. Some students were hurried away from Hogwarts by their parents over the next couple of days - the Patil twins were gone before breakfast on the morning following Dumbledore's death and Zacharias Smith was escorted from the castle by his haughty-looking father. Seamus Finnigan, on the other hand, refused point-blank to accompany his mother home; they had a shouting match in the Entrance Hall which was resolved when she agreed that he could remain behind for the funeral. She had difficulty in finding a bed in Hogsmeade, Seamus told the trio and Alula, for wizards and witches were pouring into the village, preparing to pay their last respects to Dumbledore.
Alula was surprised to read a letter that McGonagall had passed to her from Daphne among those days.
Dear Alula,
I know you may or may not be expecting this, but my mother and father have requested that Astoria and I return home. It seems stupid that even us Purebloods who used to sit so tightly with the dark crowds are afraid. My mother fears that Hogwarts is no longer safe without Dumbledore. The main reason I'm telling you all of this, A, is because you showed me that I am not my house. You took a Slytherin and believed that they were something more than dark or twisted. You weren't scared to introduce me to your friends, you saw me for me.
One day, I hope you will tell of your Blood Oath. I still am not completely sure as to why it was important for you to make, but you must tell them. Like you said to me once, in passing, 'We are bravest when we are scared'.
I do not think that this is farewell. If anything, I wish you good luck and safety. You helped show me the stars in my dark night. Now, you need to show the world.
When the war is won,
Daphne Greengrass
Some excitement was caused among the younger students, who had never seen it before, when a powder-blue carriage the size of a house, pulled by a dozen giant winged palominos, came soaring out of the sky in the late afternoon before the funeral and landed on the edge of the Forest. Alula watched from a window as a gigantic and handsome olive-skinned, black-haired woman descended the carriage steps and threw herself into the waiting Hagrid's arms. Alula knew that Gabbie was going to attend the funeral. Part of Alula thought it was Madame Delacour's fear of more danger, but Alula had a feeling that Gabbie was mourning her own loss of something hidden. Meanwhile, a delegation of Ministry officials, including the Minister for Magic himself, was being accommodated within the castle. Harry was diligently avoiding contact with any of them; he was sure that, sooner or later, he and Alula would be asked again to account for Dumbledore's last excursion from Hogwarts.
