she walked down the aisle
and knelt at the altar
she turned her face to the crucifix
and folded her hands palm to palmshe looked over the stained glass
for the millionth time
and read the stations of the cross
for the billionth timeshe recited luke's gospel
and all of genesis
she whispered the lord's teachings
and told herself to repentshe was not faithful
and she was not innocent
she was not unspoiled
and she was not a virginit was her fault
she fell into his arms too easily
and they sinned under the stars
for all the heavens too seeshe liked the sin
and he liked her sin
he kissed her skin
and told her he had funwhen he walked away
she watched him go
she wished he would stay
but she was glad that he leftand now she was sinful
and the lord will not forgive
she was so weak and allowing
and she was guiltybut guilt did not turn the Pharaoh
it did not part the Red Sea
guilt did not make Adam
it did not make Eveand so she prayed for forgiveness
and the lord did not answer
so she turned from the church
and walked far away from itshe muttered about god's teachings
more like lies, she told herself
He was not going to come
because He did not exist at allthe holy book lied
and so did all her teachers
and as she slipped the noose over her head
she whispered a prayer for them
