{prologue}

"Daddy , wake up ! Please, you can't leave me alone, i'll miss you daddy ! Daddy , daddy ! Wake up, no, no mommy , daddy's not breathing, he's not breathing, mommy" 

*10 years later*

"Wake up weirdo, we'll be late for school. "

i open one eye and stare at rose after she uttered those ridiculous words.

"I dont want to go there, i never want to go there again." She rolls her eyes and takes a deep breath.
"Oh cummon scarlett, they just asked why you never wear skirts, its nothing serious dude"

Its nothing serious ?

"Nothing serious? They mocked me, they said hurtful shit about my skin"

I pull the blanket over my head again and wiped my tears..i dont want people to see me vulnerable.

"But its not really mocking if you know that your skin is dark, people also question why im so light skinned"

Lies..

"And the award for most pathetic lie, remember when we were six at the salon?"

*9 years ago*

"Hello girls, who's doing their hair first?"

she turned her head and looked at me and said the most hurtful words..

"Hello, you're so beautiful for someone with your skin nana, awumnyama( youre so black) "

*back to present time*

"You're so hung up on that day, its just a salon lady, cummon now " she pulled the covers of my blanket..

"Its not just her..many people. Youre so beautiful rose, light skin, beautiful blue eyes, long hair. Your body shape is beautiful, nice hips and well rounded breasts." I conclude  "its different for me"

She smiles a little because of the compliments. "Thank you, thank you very much but you have to go to school. I need you."

She grabs my arm and pulls me until i hit the ground. "You need me there cause you're too shy to speak to the many guys who want you, everything is about you!"

I state as i make my way out of the bedroom.

"Good morning children. Rose your food is in the microwave "

Mommy dearest made food for her light skinned daughter only ..why am i not surprised

"And mine?" A deep voice echoes as it makes its way down the stairs. 

"Oh my goodness, i have three children ! Sorry babies, i made enough for rose and i, just help yourself in the kitchen" mom says and she rushes to do rose's hair.

"Im not suprised andrew, she's the brightest, she even managed to outshine us..literally" I said standing next to andrew in the kitchen. 

"I wish she could choke on a piece of bacon"

Jeez, Andrew is heartless.

"yeah and then struggle to breathe and has to go to the hospital where she dies."

Andrew stares at me and laughs.

" no, you took it too far"

" did i ?" I laugh quietly though.

I stare outside of the car window as we approach school. A million thoughts were running around in my mind. 

"You're beautiful my baby. Stop crying, mommy didnt mean to hit you. Daddy's loves your skin okay? It bothers mommy but daddy loves it. Daddy loves you , okay freckles?"

"We're here scar, you're always day dreaming" Rose yells as she rushes to greet her friends at the gate.

"Bye mommy" taking my chances with her, i hope she replies.  "Hmm, tell rose i also packed her favourite for lunch" ouch.

We got out of the car and slowly entered the school gates.  Andrew stopped me and looked me in the eyes. 

"You miss him right?" He rubbed my cheek. "A lot drew, i miss him..i feel alone" i tried holding my tears in. "You're not alone, im here. I know its rough " he tried comforting me.

"You don't!" I snapped "you dont know, daddy loved me for my skin, you don't know how horrible it was for me and it still is. Im awkward and people throw fake compliments at me, to make me feel good inside. " he let go and his face dropped.

"Its not easy for me , i look just like you, im dark skinned. Yes, i got mom's beautiful neutral eyes but that's it. People cross the road at my presence, scar. Don't tell me i dont know, cause you don't know! You need to learn to embrace your dark skin and stop shaming us who are comfortable in our skins" He turned around and left.

"Scarlett Ndlovu and Rose Ndlovu, please report to the principles office"

Why didn't they call andrew as well? Did we do something?

"What did you do this time weirdo?" Rose asked in an irritated voice.

"Nothing jeez, what did you do?" She rolled her eyes and opened the door to the principles office. 

"Sit down young ladies." He begins he's long ass speech.." you two are very good children (cough, cough, rose ? Good?) and do not deserve anything bad coming your wa-"

"Sorry sir,but where is this going? Are we being punished or rewarded?" I cut him off.

"Andrew was in the hospital girls" he pulls out a tissues but none of us cry.

Was?

"Was ? What do you mean was?" Rose asks with frustration. "He's left us, we will forever remember him"

what? left us ? This took a while to sink in..
