(chapter word count: 1059)"Mom, Linh's here! I'm going now!" Marella called by the front door.
"Okay, have fun! Stay safe!" Caprise called from upstairs. Marella smiled as she opened the door to the crisp September air.
Usually it was hot as balls in September, but that year was a cold one. Marella shivered lightly in her thin shirt. She didn't have a jacket, as she didn't know how long her and Linh would be gone, and she didn't really feel like lugging a sweater around all day.
So she stuck with a pair of light-wash high waisted jeans, ripped at the knees, and a plain black shirt tucked into her pants. She wore a pair of black and white checkered vans, a thick black belt, and a silver necklace with a crystal attached to it, which rested just below her chest. She debated putting on makeup before she left, but decided it was too early and couldn't be bothered.
"You ready?" Linh called from the drivers seat of a light blue Volkswagon Beetle.
"Yep. Where to first?" Marella asked as she slid into the passengers side, buckling her seatbelt.
"There's this really cute cafe by my favorite thrift store, if you want to go there? They sell coffees with the cutest latte art and these amazing chocolate croissants that are to die for!" Linh gushed, and Marella smirked at how excited the silver-eyed girl was.
"Sure. I'm starving anyways, so if they aren't as good as you're hyping them up to be, I'll probably still eat it," Marella joked. Linh rolled her eyes as she started the car.
"They are too good. Any music requests?" She held her phone up, which was attached to the aux cord in her car. Marella opened her phone and searched for her absolute favorite song.
The soft piano started to plink out, and Marella saw Linh smile out of the corner of her eye.
"Good song, good song," Linh commented as Ashe's soft voice started to sing.
So I never really knew you. God I really tried to. Blindsided. Addicted.
"It's even better than you'd think," Marella said, knowing that she didn't queue the original. Linh looked at her funny once they reached a stoplight, but Marella just smirked.
"What are you talking about?" Linh says once the light turns green, but then she gasps softly once the male voice starts to sing.
Funny how a memory turns into a bad dream. When running wild turns volatile.
"You my friend, have amazing music taste."
"Who said we're friends? I just met you the other day," Marella joked, and Linh shoved her shoulder lightly. "Watch it, you're driving!"
"Well I don't exactly take not-friends to coffee and thrifting, so yeah."
"Well do you take friends to coffee and thrifting?" Marella challenged. She wasn't quite sure where the words came from, but they slipped out. Funnily enough though, she didn't regret them.
"That's for me to know and you to wonder. Now queue some more songs!"
Linh Song:
There's no way Marella already figured out Linh's secret. That her brother wasn't the only Song part of the LGBTQ+ community.
And that, even though they talked for all of fifteen minutes, part of Linh already wanted to date Marella.
Linh fell on the P of LGBTQ+, and even though it wasn't one of the letters in the main acronym, it still existed. She didn't care what was in the pants of who she dated, just their personality. She'd only liked boys her entire life though, so she was surprised that labelling herself as Pan felt so right.
Her lowest crush was when she found Fitz Vacker attractive.
Until she realized what a homophobic piece of sh*t he was.And how f*cking much of a misogynist he was.
His fragile masculinty was his entire personality trait.Especially to people like Tam, who embraced himself and tried his hardest not to care what others thought.
The rest of the car ride was fairly quiet, mostly because Linh was scared that Marella knew, and Marella wasn't talking, and Linh didn't want to be the one to make conversation.
That was the one thing she wasn't good at.
She had no idea how she managed to get the courage to ask Marella out basically. But just as friends.
Or at least that's what she thought.
So Marella continued to play her songs, and Linh enjoyed her music taste. Louis Tomlinson, Conan Gray, Harry Styles.
Girl in Red.I don't wanna be your friend, I wanna be your b*tch.
They pulled up to the cafe and got out of the car. Marella followed Linh inside, and they went up to the counter.
"Linh, how are you?" Maria asked from behind the counter. She was an older lady, early 50's, close to retirement, and had always been Linh's barista when she came. Her graying hair was pulled back in two low braids, and crinkles formed around her deep brown eyes as she smiled at the two girls.
"Good, how about you?"
"Doing well, just doing my job. Who's this lovely lady beside you?" Linh turned her head to see Marella wave shyly.
"Hi. I'm Marella." Maria smiled.
"That's a cute name. Now, what can I get you two ladies today? Well, just you, Marella, as I'm assuming you want the usual, Linh?" Linh nodded.
"I'll get a chai tea latte, please?" Marella asked. Maria nodded, and punched it in to the machine.
"And a croissant," Linh reminded.
"Oh, yes, Linh here loves the croissants." Maria winked at Linh, and added, "For you two, free today. It'll be 8.94 please." Linh pulled her debit card out of the back of her phone and handed it to Maria, who swiped it, making a soft beep as it did.
"Thank you so much, Maria. You didn't have to make the croissants free," Linh thanked her profusely as she placed her card back into her phone case.
"Just enjoy your day ladies, and Linh?" Maria motioned for Linh to move closer, "I see in your eyes you like this one. Don't be afraid, okay?" Linh felt something swirl deep in her stomach. She'd almost forgotten that Maria knew about her sexuality.
"Hopefully I'll be seeing you again, Marella. Jen'll call you when the drinks are ready."
Linh and Marella went to find a table in the corner of the cafe, waiting for their drinks to arrive, and Maria's words kept playing over in Linh's mind.
Don't be afraid.
