" You're indeed pregnant, my dear." The doctor reiterated to Selassi for the second time as she was in a state of shock.
"I can't be, especially not now" She breathed out as she continued process how foolish she had been. It seemed that getting even with Theo had left with a consequence she didn't want, pregnancy was something she wasn't sure she wanted to experience.
If she could take it all back, she would. Allowing herself to get with James was a mistake she would deeply regret but honestly after all that, she still felt alone anyway.
It was simply not worth it.
" So here are the leaflets on what to expect in pregnancy and I expect to see you in about 3 weeks from now for your first prenatal check-up," He said sternly as he placed the leaflets in her hands but she seemed totally out of it.
She had to admit, she should've gone to the doctor a little sooner but late than never. Now being five weeks into her pregnancy, she had a strange sense that the entity was warning her about this.
But why blood?
What kind of danger was she really in?
Why would the entity even warn her anyway?
The thoughts merely crossed her mind as she left the doctors, making her way home. Since it wasn't far from the house, she walked on the side of the road being careful with every step.
Feeling reflective, Selassi thought about how she never really wanted children for as long as she could remember. Her mother always seemed sad when she would mention this but Selassi was determined that motherhood wasn't for her at all. It's not that she hated kids, she didn't see them in her life plan at all and with Theo and past boyfriends, it was never really discussed so she assumed they felt the same.
She wasn't sure how James would react.
Given that the way he was enamoured with her, he would want to be part of decision-making on how they would move forward. She slightly slipped as she reached the junction and her hand fell instinctively to her stomach, protecting it with both hands.
Though her maternal instincts seemed to kick in, Selassi was still worried about being pregnant given the current situation she was in. This entity was intent on tormenting her at any given moment and she had no defence for herself or the baby.
She reached the gate to see Kwame monitoring as he normally does. She gave him a small smile but she saw that he wasn't responding, there was a look of terror in his eyes that made her stop in her tracks.
Using his eyes, he gestured to her towards a corner that couldn't be seen from the house and as they stood there, he looked around once more to make sure they were not seen.
" Morning ma, I just wanted to see if you were ok," He asked softly, bowing slightly. Selassi let out a relieving breath because she wasn't ready to hear any more distressing information especially with the condition she was currently in.
"I'm fine, Kwame. You didn't need to pull me to the side for that" She said, lightly chuckling but Kwame wasn't reciprocating the same energy.
" It wasn't just that, I'm concerned for you, ma. I saw you talk to the neighbour a couple of weeks ago and I just want to know that whatever she said is the truth, it's too dangerous to stay here."
Selassi felt herself lose all relaxation as she listened to his words and she knew that she had to make a decision soon after telling James about the baby.
" I know. Don't worry, I'm already thinking about how to leave soon. You stay safe" She assured him and he merely nodded in response.
She scoped the compound before making her way to the house and opening the door, she was met with the presence of Auntie Diane reading the morning paper whilst sipping tea.
