My hands were clammy as we pulled into the parking lot of the dojo. I had never been in a real dojo or even taken an actual karate class. I had only ever had the one on one lessons from Daniel. Aisha sat still in the car as I got out. I walked over to her side of the car and watched her have a panic attack.
"This was a bad idea. Karate isn't for girls. We should leave. I'm not ready for this." She was spitting out all of her concerns anxiously.
"Aisha, you are so ready for this. Girls who take Karate are badass. Imagine learning how to fight and using it to embarrass Yasmine one day. Remember why we are here." I placed my hand other arm and pulled her out of the car. "C'mon. You got this."
"Thanks for coming with me." We walked towards the Cobra Kai dojo with our arms linked. A bell rang when we walked in and the two people in the room looked at us. I guess I was expecting a class full of karate masters but instead it was just Miguel and Johnny standing in the middle of an empty dojo. When Miguel told me his sensei was looking for students, it was because he had no students.
"No yoga till five." Johnny yelled out upon our arrival. "No matter how bad you need it." He looked at Aisha for that comment and she shrunk back, embarrassed.
"She's actually here for Karate." I stated confidently for her.
"I saw your website. I saw there was supposed to be a session today." She gained her confidence back.
"I appreciate you coming in, but there are no girls in Cobra Kai." I scoffed in surprise.
"And why is that?" I asked rudely.
"Same reason there aren't women in the army. Doesn't make sense." Maybe Johnny Lawrence wasn't a good guy like I though.
"Uh, sensei I need to show you something in the office." Miguel pulled him, hopefully to convince him to let Aisha join. We looked at each other as we heard their mumbled fight in the office.
"If they don't let you, I'll teach you karate myself." I whispered to her.
"You know karate?" She asked in shock.
"I took a few lessons when I was younger." I shrugged the comment off just as Johnny emerged from his office. Miguel followed behind him and gave us a thumbs up.
"Alright, take your shoes off. Hop on the mat." I leaned on the wall and watched Aisha remove her sandals. "I said take your shoes off." Johnny looked at me.
"Oh I'm not here for Karate. I actually came for moral support." I replied.
"What the hell kind of bullshit is moral support? Is that something that girls do now?" That comment made me laugh.
"If it's okay with you, I wanted to sit through one of your classes before I give you my money." I sassed him back.
"Fine." He turned his focus back to Aisha and then paused and looked back at me. "Do I know you from somewhere." He asked me.
"Um.." I looked at Miguel. "Do you remember the night of the Halloween dance at all?" I sarcastically asked. Of course he remembered that night.
"Oh shit. That was you. Alright, you can watch the class but don't be a distraction to my students." I took this as my cue to sit down.
"Okay. After further review, I've decided to allow female students. But if you want to be in Cobra Kai you can't act like a girl."
"What do you mean how do girls act?" Aisha asked innocently.
"Oh you know, all emotional, loud, complainy. Never letting you finish a sentence." This guy needed to get punched by a girl.
"Well I know a few guys who act ju-" I started to comment.
