I woke up to the sound of synchronised footsteps. They were so synchronised that in the time it took them to switch the feet, there was pin-drop silence.
I was up on my feet immediately, gathering my surroundings. The other's were up in a few seconds as well. We had been trained to sleep lightly. "Always be prepared. The Enemy has no Mercy." This held true in every second of our lives.
We were still in the Gym. It was Dark. The only light seeping in was that from the corridor outside. The tube flickered. Now confusion hit me.
"What the hell is going on?" Emma summed up our thoughts in a statement.
The footsteps grew louder. They sounded more like a weird march now.
"Where's Master Shiro?" asked Ajax
"Forget Master Shiro, where is EVERYBODY?" Levi countered.
The silence save for the marching. The darkness. Nothing made sense.
"Okay huddle up guys. Let's take stock of supplies" said Dean, rationalizing the situation.
I think that was our first mistake. We let our guard down. We were too late. Confusion became the Melon King.
"I have no weapons on me" I said
"Neither do I"
"I have a croissant?" Noah weakly supplied. Ah well. At least he had SOMETHING worthwhile.
All of a sudden, The marching became impossibly loud. The walls shook. The tube flickered, and went out. It was pitch black. The marching stopped.
I ran to the locker where the torches were kept, senses on high alert. I ran back to the others who were now standing in a circle back-to-back.
I hesitantly switched on the torch.
The doors were thrown open and in came raiders. Marching in perfect sync. Chanting god knows what.
"What in the-" Dean exclaimed
"Raiders?"
"Here???"
"OH MAN ,HOLY SHITTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!" That was Noah.
"It's got to be a sim. It has to be" I said, trying to make sense of the utter nonsense in front of me.
"Uhhhh, Lu...I don't think so. It's too real" Ryan said worriedly
"It's got to be a sim" Levi answered. " Don't be scared. They can't hurt you" he continued.
"Pffft-"
"Scared-"
"Ha. I'd never be scared"
We lied. Obviously.
That was our second mistake. Not accepting our fear. Fear is what makes us want to live. Fear is what keeps us alive.
The raiders closed in. Still in sync. Perfectly calm. No emotions whatsoever flitting across their faces. They held the spears and the glinting metal seemed to mock us.
There we stood. Nine kids. Bare handed. Against a horde of altered beings with a sole purpose to destroy us. Seemed like a task tailor made for us. Last Collectors and all.
"You guys ready?" Ryan asked.
"Oh bring it on" Kate answered.
With that we took the fight to them. Charging ahead, all our skills kicking in. The fight began.
