REECE"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Munchiiinn, happy birthday to you," Wesley sung softly into my ear. I took in a deep breath and pried my eyes open reluctantly. I really needed to lock my window at night before I fell asleep.
Birthdays.
Something everyone looked forward to, receiving gifts and appreciation for your existence. As a kid, you're eager for your birthday to come around every year, excited to open up your presents and to receive birthday wishes from your family and friends. It's the day you feel the most wanted and important.
For me, it hasn't felt that way in a long time.
Every birthday spent after my tenth has been bland and uneventful, as if it was any other ordinary day. I stopped caring about my birthday years ago. If it wasn't for me waking up to Wesley singing me a happy birthday, I probably wouldn't have even realized today was the day I was brought into this unfair world. It was like that every year, I would wake up oblivious to the month and number.
Today was the 29th of March, again.
I never celebrated my birthday; the past few years I would simply receive a birthday wish from Sammy and Violet and continue on with my day. They tried getting me out of the house at first but it was no use, I was never up for it. Part of that was because there was a certain someone missing who I used to spend every birthday with, someone who made sure every birthday was a memorable one, my father. Another part was because every year since I turned eleven, I stupidly hoped that my mom would take two seconds of her day to acknowledge my existence and wish me a happy birthday, but she never did.
Two seconds of appreciation for having me, that's all I asked.
I don't even think she remembered that today was the day she birthed me.
I suddenly felt the warmth of Wesley's chest pressed up against my back, bringing me out of my thoughts. He wrapped his arms around my waist and hugged me to him tightly, throwing his leg over my hip. I pursed my lips in attempt to stop myself from smiling at the action but I didn't think it worked very well. I craned my neck to look back at him, he gave me a breathtaking smile as our gazes met.
"Good morning beautiful, happy birthday," he whispered, I averted my gaze, feeling my cheeks heat up.
Beautiful? That's a new one.
Wesley chuckled and squeezed me as tightly as he could before letting go when I tapped his shoulder as an indication to let me breath. He sat up and creepily stared at me without a word, I chose to ignore his weird behaviour.
"How do you know it's my birthday?" I asked groggily, rubbing my eyes before sitting up next to him. Wesley shrugged and took my hand, mindlessly playing with my fingers. I watched our hands for a moment until he spoke.
"I asked Violet," was his simple answer, I nodded and checked the time on my clock, 8:43 a.m. I grumbled annoyedly under my breath, shoving Wesley hard enough to knock him back without warning.
"Ouch, What was that for?" He asked, rubbing his chest and sitting up right again.
"It's not even nine in the morning yet Wesley!" My voice raised an octave in frustration.
"So?" Wesley asked confusedly.
"Sooo, why would you!–"
