REECEViolet was standing on my front porch.
I made the mistake of answering the door without checking the window first and now I was unfortunately standing face to face with her.
The both of us stood motionless; saying, doing nothing as we challenged each other's unyielding gaze. I counted to ten, and when Violet still did nothing of entertainment I decided I had enough of wasting my time. Stepping back from the threshold, I had every intention of using the front door to reflect my frustrations by slamming it in her face, but she was quick to stop me with the swift movement of her hand pressing against it.
"Wait! I-I'm sorry. I just can't think of a good place to start," her timid voice reached my ears. The harsh grip I had on the doorknob had released some as I let my bored gaze sweep her from head to toe, observing her with disinterest.
Or at least that's what I hoped it came across as. In all honesty, it wasn't hard to pick up on her disheveled appearance. Violet was the type of girl who enjoyed dressing to impress and she never left the house without at least a little bit of makeup to accentuate her already elegant features. She loved to look her absolute best, whether she was spending the day at home or not, it didn't matter to her. Getting herself all dolled up always boosted her confidence.
The sweats, over-sized tee and messy bun combo was never her go-to, so it was a slight shock seeing her flaunt the look I often sported on a daily basis.
"That's probably because there isn't one," I drawled lowly, causing her to visibly wince at the lack of sympathy in my tone. She shuffled uncomfortably where she stood, her hands coming up in front of her to fiddle nervously with each other.
"Please just-"
"Hear you out?" I cut her off in question. "What does it look like I'm doing? It's not my fault you're suddenly tongue-tied," I retorted in a harsh manner, my grip on the doorknob tightening once again as frustration clawed it's way up to the surface of my emotions.
Violet's gaze immediately went to the ground below us in what I could only assume was shame and embarrassment. She remained silent and the picking of her nails became more fervent as the anxiety grew within her. The longer the silence stretched on the more desperate I became for some sort of reaction from her.
"Say something!" I snapped at her and she flinched at the sudden change in my behaviour. "Don't just fucking stand there," I hissed and noticed as her body began to tremble slightly. I didn't understand what was happening until I heard the quiet sniffles and watched as the first few tears ran down the surface of her cheeks.
I wish I could say it didn't bother me seeing her so upset, but if I did I would be lying. My resolve began to crumble the longer I watched her hunched figure rack with sobs. I sighed and rubbed my eyes as the exhaustion I felt suddenly hit me tenfold.
She hurt me, but I still cared about her.
"Why are you crying," I murmured tiredly, the anger I felt just a moment ago completely draining from my body.
"B-because I'm a terrible f-friend," she practically wailed, sniffling and aggressively wiping away the tears that just wouldn't stop running down her face. "I'm so s-sorry Reece," she hiccuped.
I just stood there and watched her continue to have a breakdown on my front porch, nor denying or confirming her statement. Truth is I didn't know what to say, on one hand she did a pretty shitty thing having a secret relationship with my ex behind my back, but on the other hand, she's been an extremely supportive and caring friend up until the very moment she fucked things over. I wouldn't necessarily call her a terrible friend, at least she's remorseful over what she did and is actually trying to mend the friendship she broke.
