“We do need to talk.”
Zed sat in the chair next to Eve’s bed with tears in his eyes as her words hit him like a truck. “Zed I didn’t only come back so that Brookly would know her dad. I came back because I need you to take Brooklyn.”
“Why? Eve what is going on?”
“Zed I have Breast Cancer that has spread to my liver and kidney. I have maybe 4 months left at the most.”
“That’s not fucking funny Eve. Don’t joke like that”
“I’m not.” Eve cried as she removed the wig from her head. Zed was shocked as he stared at her as the tears freely fell from his eyes. Zed quickly climbed into the bed as he heard Eve let out a couple quiet sobs. He carefully wrapped her and a sleeping Brooklyn in his arms as he layed back on the pillows. After about 45 minutes of crying Zed calmed down and worked to sooth Eve. After an hour of Eve crying into Zed’s chest and continuously apologizing for everything, she finally fell asleep. About an hour later Brooklyn woke up and Zed carefully picked her up and took her down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. On their way to the cafeteria Autumn stopped them to check on Zed.
“Hey how are you doing babe?” Autumn asked as she walked up to Zed and Brooklyn.
“I’m ok right now. Eve finally calmed down and fell asleep and Brooklyn woke up so we were just headed down to get something to eat.”
“Ok. I’m on break. How about I come with you guys!” Autumn smiled as she looked at Zed. Zed smiled as he shook his head yes and grabbed her hand. Once they got down to the cafeteria, Zed walked Brooklyn through the line as he asked her what she wanted to eat.
…..Two weeks later…..
The last couple of weeks had been rough on Zed. Eve was in and out of the hospital with her cancer, so Zed and Autumn had made a room for Brooklyn at their house. Zed and Eve had sat down with Brooklyn and told her that Zed was her dad, but at only 3 and a half Brooklyn didn’t understand everything, but was glad to have her dad with her now. Zed had taken some time off of work to spend with Brooklyn and get to know more about what the 3 year old liked, and he couldn’t be more happy that he did!
“Daddy!” Brooklyn squealed from the back seat as Zed got back in the car from picking her up from day care. Zed had gotten out of work early to surprise her, so when he picked her up she was still asleep from her nap, but woke up once he shut the car door.
“Hi baby girl! Did you have a good day at daycare?’
“Yes!”
“That’s good! Ok, we are going to stop at the hospital and see mommy and pick up Autumn and then grab aunt Zoey and Ty. Then we wil get dinner and then go home so that you can open your birthday presents!” Zed cheered as he drove to the hospital.
“YAY!” Brooklyn screamed from the back seat. But little did Zed know, tonight’s plans were about to take a turn for the worse.
