Louis sat atop a bunk bed at the orphanage. He couldn't fall asleep. He had been beaten up really badly by Snyder and the Delanceys.
He was holding a blank piece of paper and a pen. He began to write a letter, singing softly aloud as he wrote. "Dear (Y/N), How are you? I'm ok Guess I wasn't much help yesterday Snyder sulked me real good with my crutch Oh yeah (Y/N), this is Louis by the way These here guards They is rude They say 'jump' Boy, you jump or your screwed But the food ain't so bad, least so far 'Cause so far they ain't brung us no food~."
Louis bit his lip. "Ha ha," he wrote. "I miss the rooftop,"
He looked up out the window, remembering all the good times he had with his best friend. "Sleepin' right out in the open In your penthouse in the sky There's a cool breeze blowin' Even in July~"
He looked back down at his paper. "Anyways," he continued, "yeah, so, guess what There's a secret escape plan I got Tie a sheet to the bed Toss the end out the window Climb down then take off like a shot!"
Louis furrowed his eyebrows. He let out a deep sigh. "Maybe though, not tonight I ain't slept And my leg still ain't right."
He looked down at his busted legs. Dried up blood was stained on his white pants. Snyder had also given him a black eye.
"Hey but the king, he's going down~ And then girl, I was thinkin' we might just go Like you were saying~ Where it's clean, and green, and pretty With no buildings in your way And you're ridin' palominos everyday~ Once that train makes—"
"Shhhh!" another boy said. Louis' singing had woken him up.
Louis looked at him as the boy placed his head back on his pillow and closed his eyes. "Damn this place," he muttered. He continued to write. "I'll be fine, good as new But there's one thing I need you to do On the rooftop you said that a family looks out for each other So you tell all the fellas for me to protect one another~ The end Your friend."
He scratched the last line out. "Your best friend," he wrote underneath it. He crossed that out too. "Your brother, Louis~."
"All right, enough already!" someone else cried. Louis folded up the letter and blew out the candle that was seated on the fence of his top bunk.
