What Am I

(Layla's p.o.v.)

Ian's groan in pain as Andy tightened his grip on his neck echoed through the house. I slowly descended the stairs with my hands raised.

"Andy don't hurt him."

But he was in another trance that left him unwilling to listen. Whatever anger he felt was too deep for even me to bring him out of. All of a sudden Ian dropped to the ground and Andy flew back a few feet, frozen it seemed on the floor.

"Take him and go Layla. I can't hold him for long."

Marla stood in the kitchen doorway, straining to keep Andy on the ground. I'd never seen someone use magic but I tried to ignore what she was doing and rushed to Ian. He held his neck and stumbled out the door he opened. I made it halfway out before turning to look at Andy. Marla's magic gave way but he didn't move, just sat on the ground staring back at me. His eyes kept me frozen in place and i felt such a tug to come back inside and fix whatever was going on.

"Layla!" Ian gripped my arm gently trying to get my attention. His voice wasn't panicked, but there was an urgency that told me we needed to leave.

It was like Andy gave a slight nod, his permission to leave him there on that floor struggling with whatever was happening in his mind. I let Ian pull me away and to my car. The mansion gates flew by along with city lights. I didn't protest when i realized we weren't going to my house, but Ian's, and i didn't try to say anything to break the silence that fell over us. All i could see was Andy's face, the sadness at me leaving. It made my heart ache to think he wanted me to stay, and i couldn't even think about what he might do since Marla used her magic on him to save Ian. As much as i'd tried to convince myself i hated Andy and that i didn't need him, tonight had proven it was a lie. I felt the same way i did about when i was with him that i did now and nothing would make it go away.

Ian still didn't say anything as he got out of the car and helped me out. He leaned against the front of my car and looked up at the starless sky above. I joined him, trying not to let my shoulder touch him after what i'd caused to happen to him tonight. He was probably about to end things.

"So that's the guy you were terrified of seeing at the club?" I nodded, not feeling like i could make my voice work. "I don't blame you, he's got quite a temper on him it seems. Since i almost lost my head back there do you mind if i ask why exactly you were there?"

I felt my hands tremble at the memory of seeing him pinned against the door. "You weren't suppose to be there Ian."

He snapped his attention to me and moved to stand in front of me, taking my face in his hands. "Do you know how much it would've destroyed me if he had hurt you? Do you even know how worried i was when i heard your voice over the phone? Please don't tell me you thought i wouldn't come."

I opened my mouth but found no words to say. I'd honestly only thought about Andy in the moment i was calling Ian to tell him, about what he'd done to make Marla sound so worried. I certainly hadn't accounted for the fact Ian might waltz right in to a vampire's mansion to find me.

"Layla, I would never stop you from going there, but i might've asked a few questions before letting you just go to his place. Not because you use to be with him, but for the fact that he's a vampire." The word sounded like pure disgust coming out of his mouth. "Clearly he's like all the ones we see on television mindlessly following their anger and bloodlust and-"

"Stop." I shoved his hands away from me and backed towards the driver's door. "Don't talk about them like that."

His eyes widened like i was crazy. "Please don't tell me you think they are good? Gods Layla are you that naive? They aren't like us, they don't have a way to control their emotions or the fact that they are born killers!" He threw his hands in the air and i was reminded of the way CC would talk about humans or look at me. I recognized that disgust for another living being. "I've seen enough humans be beaten senseless by his kind for sport. He's just another bloodsucking menace."
