A girl with her midlength brown hair entered the room with a shy smile on her face. You could tell she was nervous. She doesn't look Japanese for me but she has the Asian vibe on her."Please tell something about yourself, dear" our teacher broke the silence in the room. My classmates seemed to be amazed by her looks. I could say that she was kinda pretty.
"Hi, my name is Kim NaBi. I was from Los Angeles, California but we moved here in Japan last month. I'm half Korean and half German. I still don't know how to speak Japanese very well so I hope you could help me with that." She finished introducing herself and stared on the floor. I know it was scary talking in front of the class especially when the teacher asked you to.
I was the one feeling nervous now when the teacher mentioned my name.
"You can sit near the window, dear. Nishimura-kun? Please raise your hand so that Kim-chan will know which table it is."
I raised my hand while my classmates follow her with their eyes until she got on her chair. The bell rang and the teacher bid her goodbye, reminding us about the upcoming exam. My curious classmates immediately surrounded NaBi and start asking her questions. I don't want to eavesdrop but I noticed from her voice that she was uncomfortable. Her Japanese began to break and she sometimes murmured some words that I don't understand. I was about to say something when my friends start dragging me out of the room and complained how hungry they were.
The canteen were now full of hungry students. The long tables were full and you could hear all the noises everywhere.
I began eating the sandwich that I bought since I didn't have anything with me. We went back to the room 10 minutes earlier. My friends left me for a quick restroom. I found her sitting on her chair and looking by the window. I realized it was just me and her in the classroom.
I sat on my chair, debating with myself if I should to talk to her or not. I hate awkward silence. It's either leave or talk, Riki. Come on!
I turned to look at her. She sighed deeply then just noticed my presence now. She thought I left with my friends again. We stared at each other for a few seconds and looked away with an awkward chuck. I forgot, I haven't seen her at the canteen.
"Ehh... Uhhh.." The idiot inside of me couldn't even talk! For goodness, Riki!
She stared at me again, waiting for me to create words, I think.
"Have you eaten your lunch? I haven't seen you at the canteen." Good. I made it. So proud.
"I'm not that hungry.." She said softly. You could hear some accent even when she speaks.
Think, Riki. Say something again. Oh, God. I must forgot to use my brain. It's only a girl!
"Well, I'm Nishimura Riki. You can call me Riki." I said trying to think if I need to shake her hand or something.
"I'm NaBi. Nice to meet you, Riki-chan." She said. I could feel my ears getting red or it was just because of the heat. The air condition is on, though. I didn't even realized that I'm smiling now.
She reached out her hand for a handshake. I immediately and unconsciously wiped my hands on my pants to get it. Good lord.
My eyes went to the door as we heard our classmates began to fill the room. I reached for my bag and found a box of banana milk that I saved for later. I didn't even think much so I quickly got it and put it on her desk. I did it without looking at her, though. I could feel that she got surprised by my actions. I couldn't even tell why I did that.
"Drink it. It will make you full until the end of the class. We still have 3 hours." I managed to explain.
She slowly looked at the box and get it from her desk. She took out the straw and put it on the box and start drinking it. I glanced at her while she was trying to read what's written on the box.
The class continued and the last subject was English. The teacher asked us to pick a story from the book and read it in class. NaBi was called first as everyone knew she can speak English very well. All eyes and ears were on her as her calmly read a story for us. I may not good in speaking in English but I understand it well. After she finished, the class clapped their hands for her. She smiled while going back on her seat. We managed to exchange glances and I took the chance to silently clap for me and smile. She exchanged the smile for me.
The class ended and everyone was talking about going out and play before going home. I wished I could say goodbye to her but failed since my friends already dragged me out.
As we reached the gate, we saw a black and expensive-looking car outside. It made all the students looked at it as they passed the school gate. I heard some footsteps from my back so I went to see who was it from. NaBi came running like she was chasing by someone and immediately went inside the black car. Oh, she's rich. I thought. I didn't mind it, of course. That's life.
I reached our house and greeted my parents and sister in the living room. I caught them watching a movie without me. I shared what happened today at dinner but didn't mention about the new girl. I know they would just teased me for getting interested with a certain girl. Well, am I interested? Just curious, maybe.
I laid on my bed and called it a day. This is the first time I felt excited for school. Can't wait for tomorrow.
