Maple

I was walking away from the line after Kyle paid for both our lunches. I'm so lucky to know someone like Kyle. He never asks questions. He never expects me to do everything. He is helpful.

Suddenly, I'm yanked out of my thoughts as I feel something hit my leg. I stumble, landing on the ground with a loud crash! causing my food to go all over my sweater, face, hair, and on the floor.

I sit up on my knees, rubbing my snout since I hit it off the floor. I hear laughter. Cruel, taunting laughter. I look up, seeing that almost everyone was standing there, pointing at me, laughing. I feel tears swell up in my eyes. I look over to the side, seeing Lila smirking, her eyes gleaming in the cafeteria lights.

"That's what ya get, fag!" She shouts, laughing harder at my shocked expression.

I jump up, running as fast as I could to the nearest room I could find that was empty. It was the empty choir room. I close the door behind me, finally letting the tears fall. I slide against the wall next to the door, sobbing silently. I push my face into my hands, trying to muffle the sobs. I hear a knock on the door. It sounded hesitant. The door slowly opened, revealing a concerned Coraline. She looked down at me, smiling softly.

"Hey." She said quietly. "Mind if I join you?"

I nod slowly, knowing that I shouldn't say no. She smiles slightly wider, closing the door softly behind her. She slide down the wall next to me. We sat there staring at a wall while a few tears slipped down my face.

She looked over at me after about two minutes. "Hey, are you still hungry? I could get you something from the vending machine. I mean, you never got to eat your lunch..."

I regard her, trying to see if she meant it. I nod slowly after deciding that she meant it. She smiled.

"Okay. I'll be back in a second."

She stood up to leave, but I quickly grabbed her hand. "W-wait! Where is Kyle a-and Sammy?"

Her face contorted into a frown. "Umm... maybe it's best to not say."

Disappointment floods me. Maybe they don't really care about me? "O-oh... okay.."

"Don't worry, they do care about you." She giggled, ruffling my hair. "They just needed to take care of something. That's all!"

She left me alone. I sat there for about five minutes before she came back. In her arms were a rice crispy treat, a Code Red, and a bag or Doritos. I smile slightly.

"Here ya go Maple." She handed me the things. "Sorry. It's not that healthy, but it's what they have."

"N-no. It's fine."

As I eat, I hear yelling and banging, but I ignore it. Right now, I believe I am hanging out with....

I'm hanging out with a friend. Yeah. Coraline is my friend. I like that.

Coraline looks over, seeing fresh tears roll down my face.

"Woah! Maple, are you okay?" She asks, frantic to help me.

"I'm better than okay." I whisper, not stuttering for the second time today. I look over, noticing that she had a confused look on her face. "I made a friend today. Hell, I believe I made three." I chuckle.

She smiles widely at this. "So, we're friends?"

I nod. "Yeah. We're friends."
