"Can you tell me more?" I asked Alanie eagerly. She was explaining the connection that the Dragoness had to to her own dragon and how it was different from the connection with the other dragons.

Alanie laughed, "what else do you want me to tell you?"

"Explain it again?"

"Okay. But not again after this." Alanie took a deep breath. "When the Dragoness is chosen she is branded with a series of marks on her arm. Before the Dragoness is even born, her dragon has those marks. They are not visible until the current Dragoness is dead. For example, I had your marks, I was destined to be your dragon even though there was already a Dragoness that was not mine. Do you understand that?" I nodded and gestured for her to continue. She did, "the bond between a Dragon and a Dragoness is the most precious bond there is. It can be easily severed, manipulated, and used in battle.

"It can be severed by the dragon and Dragoness being separated for the Dragoness's whole life. It's a dangerous, and agonizing process. As far as my knowledge goes, it has only happened once. That was a terrible time. A terrible time. In battle a dragon and the Dragoness act, and think as one. They become lethal together. And through the dragon, the Dragoness can connect to every dragon and talk to them. The bond can be manipulated, because once the dragon and Dragoness bond, they can feel the other's pain, emotions, and hear each other's thoughts. The enemy, can torture the dragon, and the Dragoness will know. She will them be at the mercy of the enemy, because she will want to protect her dragon. It's the same for the dragon.

"So as you can see, it's a marvelous thing to be had. And many people want to take it from the Dragoness." Alanie stopped and took a breath. I cut in before she continued. "How is the Dragoness chosen? Who is the person that brands the Dragoness? And everyone thinks dragons are extinct, so isn't there no enemy now?"

Alanie shook her big head. "I don't know how the Dragoness is chosen, there is a man, he is called the Brander. He has been around since the beginning of the dragons, or so I've been told. No dragon knows how he chooses, but he does. And Rosalie, there is always a villain."

I bit my bottom lip, thinking about everything I was told. More questions formed but I decided that I should wait with the questions. But one more needed to be asked. "Why are worried? I can sense it." I could, I could feel her uneasiness through our bond.

She sighed and curled up tighter. "Because, I have been conversing with some of the elder dragons." She paused. "And?" I prompted. "And apparently, there are many dragons dying randomly. They said there is no reason for them to be dying, but they are. And the elders have said that there was a prophecy. The prophecy said that the dragons would begin dying out when the last Dragoness came forward."

I gaped at Alanie. "I-I'm the reason the dragons are dying? Why? How am I the reason?" I started to panic.

"Rosalie. Calm down, you aren't killing them. Someone else is. You must save them. We must save them." Alanie told me.

I nodded and stood. "I need to get back home. My father and brother are probably worried sick." Alanie nodded.

"Ok. Just call me if you need me." Alanie reminded me.

I walked out of the cave and went and got onto Winnie. We rode back to the castle and I saw that it was already getting dark. Niles is going to be so angry with me. And Father, who knows?
