Cathy Sanova looked back at her mother who sat in the car waving at her as if her life depended on it. Her mom was a lot more excited about her first day at Seneca State University than she was. She couldn't believe she let her mother and her aunt talk her into going to such a giant university. It was a college for rich people. She had no business being there. She was perfectly fine at the small community college she'd attended her freshman year. And yet, here she was... It was bad enough that she hadn't gotten along well with the students at the community college. She'd kept mostly to herself and buried her nose in her studies and didn't look up to acknowledge anyone. She'd been too shy to socialize with anyone because the city was so new to her. If she couldn't deal with a community college, her life was going to be hell here...

Helena Sanova had wanted to see her only daughter first steps on the prestigious campus and had insisted on helping her move into the dormitory with her cousin, Kiara. She was so proud of her for deciding to go, even though she had to do a lot of pushing and some slight manipulation, but in the end it all worked out...at least for her sake. She was not about to be the only one in her family whose daughter didn't attend Seneca State University. Her cousins were all there and now they were complete.

"Smile honey!" she yelled out her Ford Explorer.  "Stop looking so miserable! You're never going to get a rich man like that!"

"That's why you talked me into this, didn't you? Thinking I'd get some rich boyfriend and marry him and he'd take care of us for rest of our lives. You're dreaming, Mom! It's never going to happen! You're such a gold digger, just like Shenequa's mother!"

"Don't talk about your aunt young lady, she helped me get you into this university. Keep it up and I'll give you a good spanking in front of all these gorgeous people walking the campus. Damn...why are they all so good-looking? I haven't seen one normal looking person yet."

"It's because they're rich. And you do see a normal person, she's standing right in front of you! I'm going to be the only "normal" person here which I'm sure is their definition of ugly!"

"Oh honey, stop being such a brat and give your first day here a chance. You never know unless you try," her mother said cheerfully, completely ignoring how uncomfortable her daughter was on campus. "Call me if you need anything. I love you! I'm so proud of you. Take care now. Bye!"

Cathy raised her hand to stop her mom from speeding off so quickly, but was too late. She'd deserted her in a sea of perfect people walking around. Every one of them were White and they all had this entitled look on their faces. Except for her cousin Katrina, was she the only Black girl on campus? Kiara didn't count since she was half Black and Asian and neither did Shenequa since she was mixed with Black and White...She was sure they fit in very well since they were both very beautiful.

She sighed and fiddled around with her book bag looking for the paper that told her where she needed to go for her morning classes. She adjusted her glasses so she could see better and picked a direction to walk in. The place was just so big. How on earth was she going to find her classes and not be late? That is...if she found them at all...

Brent Jaggers pulled up into the parking lot with the music blasting. He was so into the song playing he didn't see the nerdy looking girl crossing in front of his path until it was too late. He stepped on his brakes and blasted his horn loudly and then saw her go down. Oh god! His first day back as a sophomore and he'd hit a Black girl that had been walking around with a dazed look on her face. He hope this wouldn't turn into a race thing. He had Black friends, both female and male, but they were in the minority which made them defensive over stuff like this. His friends were cool, but whenever he met a new Black person, their guards were up which told him this university was still narrow-minded about other races.
