Chapter Seventeen: Let's Interview!

Me and Skulduggery sit side by side in the row of tributes waiting to be interviewed. My palms are sweating from nerves and I wipe them on my dress, hoping it won't damage the electricity that is still making me glow like a Christmas tree.

The district four girl is being interviewed right now and I know Skulduggery is next. We decided that if he is asked about the kiss he should just act mysterious and avoid the question, leaving the full reveal to me. He is called up and I know I'm on in three minutes. Skulduggery uses his trademark comment, "Lets Interview!" and the interview begins. Skulduggery is very good. He acts mysterious and dark, avoiding questions like age and giving very philosophical answers to questions about the games and the Capitol. I can see people eating him right up and am startled when the buzzer rings and he leaves the stage.

My name is called next and I walk shyly down to the seat where Templesmith is waiting. He reaches his hand out to shake then draws it back mock-fearfully as my dress sparks.

"Is it safe?" he asks, grinning hugely.

"Oh very safe," I reply, smiling, "It was designed by Clarabelle after all."

The camera turns to Clarabelle in the audience and she smiles and waves. Templesmith reaches out his hand once more but instead I step towards him and give him a light hug, having to struggle not to run away instead. I pull out of the hug and smile, and Templesmith laughs and sits down in a chair similar to Petunia's, inviting me to sit across from him in another. I take my seat and smile in relief when I realise this one is actually comfortable, unlike Petunia's.

"So Valkyrie," Templesmith begins, "I really must ask, the kiss?"

"Oh, of course," I reply, smiling my cutest smile as taught by Clarabelle, "I love Skulduggery with all my heart."

"Just as friends or...?"

"Oh no. We're together."

I hear gasps all over the room and an 'aww' or two. Exactly the reaction we wanted.

"Oh my! How tragic that you were both reaped!" Templesmith looks around the room to prompt reactions before continuing, "How long have you two been together?"

"Ah, well there's the thing. I am almost grateful for being reaped, because if that had never happened we might never have admitted our love for each other. I have loved Skulduggery all my life, you see? But I was just too scared of what people would think if I told him."

"True, true. So how do you feel about him being a skeleton? I mean there must be quite an age difference there!"

"What does age matter when your hearts are pure and your love is true?"

I almost hurl saying such a cheesy line, but the reaction from the crowds is worth it and I can see I have people on my side now. I continue,

"My love for Skulduggery is as true as I am sitting here. I think that is enough to let me forget about age."

"Quite right, quite right. I can see how much you love him. And that leads me to ask one question. What will you do in the arena, where only one person will emerge victorious?"

"I'm willing to die for Skulduggery. I know he is adamant that I should live, but if he died I don't know if I could live with that. I would kill myself to save him, and that's just how things are."

Templesmith looks at me sadly, holding my hand before standing up, pulling me up with him.

"Ladies and gentlemen! I present to you true love! May nought but death tear it apart!"

Then the buzzer rings and Templesmith lifts my arm and twirls me, my dress sparking, before I walk back to my seat. The crowd is still chanting my name as I sit down and I get a huge roar of approval when I kiss Skulduggery once more. Templesmith has to struggle to regain control of the crowd so he can interview the next tribute, but I can see he is having a really hard time.

The next few interviews go past in a whirl, although I see Rye getting a lot of sympathy from adoring Capitol fans. I'm sure he will get a lot of sponsors, Aura too. Then the interviews are finished and me and Skulduggery walk out into the corridor.

"Lets Interview!" I scoff, laughing, "That's not even proper grammar, seriously!"

"Hey, it's not my fault!" protests Skulduggery, "Ghastly made me say it!"

Just then Ghastly rounds the corner, Clarabelle at his side, and points at Skulduggery. We laugh together, and Skulduggery looks offended. Soon we need to stop for breath and Ghastly wheezes.

"I can't believe.. I can't believe you actually said that!"

We laugh more, and a passing stylist looks at us in concern, making us laugh even more hysterically. When we finally manage to stop Clarabelle congratulates us on our interviews.

"The Capitol loved you two! You are sure to get loads of sponsors!"

I smile at her and sigh in relief. This has been one hectic day and I am very glad it's over even though tomorrow is when we will be sent into the arena. I just want to crawl up in a ball and hibernate for a year.

Clarabelle sends me and Skulduggery to our quarters to sleep but I end up crawling into Skulduggery's bed and falling asleep with his arms around me.
