TRIS POV
Jenine said that tonight at dinner we were going to meet her husband, Max. For some reason the name sounds familiar. Max Matthews? Anyway he'll be home sometime around five. It's four thirty. I'm in my room trying to do my homework, but I keep getting texts from both Marlene and Christina. Marlene wants me to go to the movies with her to the movies and Christina wants to know if there are any cute guys in Chicago. 'Yeah right.' I text her. 'Come on! Give me details, girl!' Christine texts back and I can almost see the frustrated look on her face. 'Okay there are a few but none I'm interested in.' I say, and all I receive back is a 'sure'. All at once I hear a door open downstairs and Caleb running up to my room, almost screaming "You'll never believe who just walked through the door!" I get up and run downstairs just to find no one is there.
"Who's here?" I ask Caleb, confused.
"Come on. He's in the living room." Caleb starts walking in the direction I think is the living room. I'm still getting the hang of things here. As I walk through the doorway Caleb went through, I see a dark skinned man from behind talking with Jenine.
"Oh, Beatrice, hello. I didn't see you come in." Jenine says standing up. "This is my husband, Max." So this is Max. Seems cool.
"Hey, Beatrice nice to meet you." He says shaking my hand.
"Diddo." I say. Then I hear Caleb whisper in my ear, "He's the senator of Michigan." So THAT'S where the money came from. Makes enough sense. After an awkward silence, Caleb speaks up.
"So why didn't we see you a couple of days ago?" Oh yeah Jenine said he wanted to meet us at dinner, I had completely forgotten.
"I got dragged into an awful meeting south of Chicago. Took forever to shut up those old souls." I like this guy. No wonder Dad seemed to be fond of Jenine's husband, the few times he mentioned him. A wave of sadness hits me like a wave as I remember my dad. Then I remember mom and everything goes south. I excuse myself to the bathroom. Once inside the sealed doors I breath heavily, desperately trying to cage the sobs trying to escape my throat. I haven't had real time to process my thoughts. Natalie and Andrew Prior were dead, and now I'm left here at my aunt's house in Chicago. I left my best friends when I left. Thinking turned out great. Just then I got a text from Marlene. 'You have GOT to come w/ us 2morrow!' -Marlene
'I'm not sure if I can.' -Tris
'What did you join a club in the last 12 hrs?' -Marlene
'No :)' -Tris
'Then come!' -Marlene
'Fine.' -Tris
'YES!' -Marlene
I hear a knock.
"Beatrice. Dinner's ready." Caleb says through the door.
"Okay."
