Math is usually boring , but today it seemed even more so. Until a dark haired, tan skinned, blue eyed boy walked through the door late. That's the guy I bumped into, right? Is he in my math class? Marlene bumped her shoulder into. me.
"Hey it's Four. Your new arch nemesis. You know, you should talk to him sometime. You seem to have a lot in common from what I hear about him and what you've told me about yourself."
"He seems sort of like jerk."
"Maybe he is, but it doesn't mean you don't have stuff in common." she said this in a sing-songy voice for some reason.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I dunno. Hey! Four's British! British guys are never jerks."
"I doubt that's true."
"Give the guy a chance!" She does know this is fictional, right? "Hey Uriah's coming over here we'll ask him what he thinks, he's like Four's best friend. Hey, Uri! Over here!"
"What's with his name? Isn't it a number?" She shrugs her shoulders and the guy named Uriah walks over here.
"Hey, Mar. What's up?"
"Tris here was wondering if Four was a jerk." He laughs.
"Of course he is, but he's also really loyal and, not really kind but curdious all the time. That's pry why he's a Divergent."
"What the heck is a Divergent?"
"Oh yeah since your a transfer you probably don't know what the factions are, except that it's in the school name. Well it's a system where they test your aptitude to see which faction you belong in, in hopes of raising the educational standards. There's Abnegation: the selfless, Amity: the kind, Erudite: the intelligent, Candor: the annoyingly honest, and last and best Dauntless: the brave. I'm guessing your Dauntless, based off of the way you told Four off this morning. A Divergent is a overs on that has more than one aptitude."
"So that's what the "faction" meant in "Faction High".
"What're you guys?"
" We're both Dauntless. Oh and Tris, since your probably Dauntless you'll get to see a lot more of Four." Marlene winks and Uriah is cracking up.
"I totally ship it!"
"Ship what?" All the sudden I tense. Four is standing right behind me. "Uriah Pedrad. You better not be making up fan fiction about me and those Amity girls again!"
"What Amity girls?" I ask.
"Marlene who's this?" He asks Marlene not even trying to include me in the address.
"My name is Beatrice Prior, but I go by Tris." I put my hand out for him to shake and he takes it.
"Nice to meet you. Just so you know, just by calling me rude and walking off isn't enough to get me to leave you alone." He turns and walks away.
"What the hell?"
"I have no idea." Says Marlene.
"He's never said or done anything like that before." Said Uriah. What was Four's problem? And why was my hand still tingling from when Four and I shook hands?
