14. Part Hawk, All Monster

Dylan was awoken by loud screeches, it sounded like a hawk, only ten times louder and twenty times shriller. The sound of metal scraping against glass was almost ear shattering. What was happening?

Dylan wrestled her eyelids open and everything was hazy at first, slowly, as her sight began to clear and she saw Derek in front of her. His eyes were wide around the rims and his face looked ashen. Scared, terrified, danger flashed in his eyes.

Groggily, she sat up straight releasing that she was lying against the edge of the headrest instead of Dennis’s shoulder. Dennis was nowhere to be found. Turning to her other accompaniment, she asked, “Hey, where’s Dennis?”

Derek was looking out of the window in shock and disbelief that he didn’t even hear her. What’s going on? She looked out of the window and saw long rows of trees, the passengers in the train were mostly asleep already and there was still at least two hours to the next stop.

She squinted into the row of the trees, trying to see what Derek was staring so intently at. “Derek, there’s noth-”

Suddenly a bird-like thing appeared in front of her. Its beak was razor sharp and its claws were practically metal and curved at the ends, it could rip off anything with those. It would have been a hawk only that it was the size of a werewolf. According to twilight, that would have been at least six foot three and a meter wide which was exactly what it looked. Its claws slashed against the glass window leaving behind permanent marks and an ear piercing screech.

Dylan let out a scream and backed away to the end of the seat onto Dennis’s one. Clutching onto the hand rest, she breathed, “What in the name of god is that?!”

Ceregolus.” Derek muttered under his breath. “What is that thing doing here?”

Dylan felt a lump in her throat. “I beg your pardon?”

Derek eyes darted to her and he explained hastily, “It’s one of the witches’ creations. Ceregolus. That’s what they call it. Part hawk, all monster.”

Dylan eyes widened in horror at what Derek said. Monster? She didn’t really expect one to find them. And such a scary one at least.

“What the heck?!” Dennis exclaimed. It looks like he was back from the gents, he wiped his wet hands on his pants and Dylan couldn’t help but felt that he looked really irresistible with a slight bedhead and crumpled clothes.

Oh god, she mentally smacked herself, this was not the time to drool over her boyfriend. She had a more deadly Cere-whatever on her tail.

She swung her head towards Derek, “What should we do?” Derek had long regained his calm and he stood up confidently. “We’ll just have to destroy it.” His hands burst into flames, there were a dangerous glint in his eyes.

“B-but, there are passengers all around!” she reasoned as Derek threw his bolt of flame against the glass, shattering the window. She didn’t notice all the passengers around were frozen, even the waiters who were making their rounds collapsed on the ground. It was as if time stopped and the whole universe just froze on the spot.
