6. Sorcerer or human?
Dylan always thought that in comic books when a superhero was told ‘You are the chosen one.’ It would have meant that he was blessed with incredible powers to save the world and that it was cool. Yet when those same words were said to her, it felt…scary. It was like she suddenly had a thousand ton burden weighing on her shoulders.
“My dear, this is your choice after all. You can choose to stay carefree in your kingdom. Maybe with luck the sorcerers would be able to thwart the witches plan…” Cynthia said, yet Dylan could feel that even Cynthia was not convinced with her own plans. Dylan thought really hard. What was there to lose? Then, a little part of her shouted out, you might die. She thought back, instead of all those millions of innocent lives, what was hers in compared? As she was about to agree, Dennis stood up. His chair scraped against the marble floor causing everyone to turn to him.
“Dylan, I need to speak to you.” He beckoned her to the narrow hallway. It was dimly lit and led to the back of the castle. It was an escape route in the case of an emergency. Confused yet curious, she stood up and followed him, feeling that he had something important to tell her. As they walked down the long hallway in silence, She stared at Dennis’s back. What did he want to tell her?
Suddenly, he turned around to face her. She didn’t have enough time to stop as she crashed into him. Dennis’s hands shot out and encircled her waist, pulling her to him. She looked up into his eyes. His deep blue eyes looked almost purple under the lights, while her eyes looked golden under it. Her breath hitched in her throat as her face was inches away from his, too close for comfort.
“Dennis…” Dylan began; before she could say the next word, Dennis’s mouth came crashing onto hers. His lips were soft and a bolt of electricity shot throughout her body. She gasped, shocked at his reaction. He took the chance to taste her mouth, she tried to pull back yet her arms were slack. Eventually, she gave in and kissed him back, savoring the moment. She entangled her fingers in his hair and was amazed by how soft it felt. His hand was on her back and the other in her hair, he pushed her against the wall to deepen the kiss. As her body molded against his, he let out a moan at the back of his throat. Dylan smiled against his lips. After a while, they broke the kiss at the same time. Dennis’s forehead rested against hers and they were both breathless.
“What were you about to say?” Dennis smiled and asked her. Dylan thought hard but it wouldn’t come back to her. Then it came crashing back to her. “Nothing…what did you do that for?” Dylan asked even though she liked it
“You don’t like it?” Dennis asked in mock hurt. Dylan adverted her eyes trying not to laugh. Her eyes clouded over as she whispered, “You left for so long after all.”
Dennis sighed and wrapped his arms around her. “Dyl, you knew why don’t you? I had to make a decision to join the sorcerers like what you were given now. I’m sorry…”
Dylan sniffed and shook her head. “I know. It’s just that, why didn’t you tell me?” Dennis chuckled humorlessly. “I don’t think you would have believed me. And how was I to tell you that three years later you would be faced with the same dilemma?”
Dylan’s mouth dropped open and she looked up to Dennis. “You knew?! You knew of it all along?”
Dennis nodded. “At first, I didn’t believe it, but when Lady Cynthia showed me the scene of you when you were young and the dazzling sight of Enchantress Becky leaving the note. I was convinced. Yet, it occurred to me that you had some signs of being a sorcerer, the way your eyes changes color. It might not be obvious but its sure happening.” Dennis pointed to Dylan’s eyes.
Dylan mouth was still hanging open in shock. Her brain couldn’t process all these information at once. So it was true, the way she always wondered why her eyes seemed to look different.
“Close your mouth, Dyl, you’re tempting me.” Dennis grinned mischievously. Dylan snapped her mouth shut and glared playfully at him. “Let’s go back. They must be waiting. Oh, and by the way, enchantress Becky is one of the most powerful and fearless sorcerer in history.” Dennis continued in a sing-song voice. “The same one whom you just laughed about.”
Dylan grimaced. “You tell me.”
Her parents and Cynthia sure didn’t seem to mind waiting. They sat there with big smile plastered onto their faces and eyed Dylan and Dennis who came in.
“Um…we’re back?” Dylan broke the awkward silence.
“Yes, yes. Come, sit down!” Cynthia said enthusiastically. Dylan and Dennis sat down beside each other as the Queen asked, “Have you made up your mind?”
“Yes.” Dylan stated confidently, she took a deep breath. “I’m in.” Cynthia and the King smiled in relief. The Queen gave a small teary smile. “Mum…” Dylan sniffled and leaned over to her mother. The Queen grabbed Dylan’s hand and smiled, “Dylan, you’re a grown up already and you made the right decision. Remember dear, if you ever want to come back to visit, we’re always here.”
“I know, mom.” Dylan croaked out, her eyes were filled with tears like her mother’s and she squeezed her mother’s hand. “Tell Regina I’ll be back soon.”
Cynthia cleared her throat lightly and continued, “Don’t worry your majesty, Dylan can return whenever she wants. She is not a prisoner.”
The Queen smiled satisfactorily and released her grip. “Then I guess you must be going, no?” Cynthia stood up and bowed politely. “Thank you very much, your majesty.” Dylan and Dennis stood up and bade their farewells, with lots of tearful hugs from the Queen.
As the three of them walked out into the cold winter air, Dylan stared at Cynthia’s back. Will she suddenly turn into an evil sorcerer and was just putting an act in front of the King and Queen?
Cynthia turned and smiled. Dylan looked into her piercing green eyes; she was just a little taller than her. “Don’t worry Dylan, I’m a good person.”
Dylan looked at her horrified. “You can read minds too?!” Cynthia burst out laughing and said proudly, “No dear, I can guess. Many gave me that look when they left their houses with me. I must look unbelievably stunning, no?”
Dylan turned away and muttered under her breath, “Narcissist.”
“So anyway, let’s get us there before dusk.” Dennis injected.
“How?! Greece is halfway across the globe from here. We haven’t even booked a plane or anything yet!” Dylan cried out.
“My dear,” Cynthia explained calmly, “You have lots to learn. I have my ways; after all I am a sorcerer. Magic is my territory.”
