13 Years Later
It was quiet.
They had been scouting out the monster for hours. The cold snow was starting to make Percy shiver.
Mother told me to wait here. He thought. But he always hated it when she made him wait hidden somewhere.
Most days she allowed him to travel among the hunters freely and fight with them. But every so often, when there was a chance he could be seen by others, she had him hidden away, his hood drawn low, and made him wait.
She had sensed a powerful monster loose, and still asked him to come along, as in some cases he was forced to wait at camp, but he was strictly instructed to remain hidden and out of sight.
Percy stood crouched in a tree, his bow drawn, ready for an sign of trouble. He hadn't seen his mother or any of the other hunters. They had told him to wait. Percy had assumed his mother had only placed him here because she assumed it would be safe.
He had been out here for hours now, while the rest of the hunt scouted other areas. Percy was used to long stakeouts but if this went on any longer he would jump out of the tree and find the monster himself.
He wished his mother allowed him to scout like the rest of her hunters. He was deadly accurate with a bow and could hold his own in a fist fight, training with the immortal huntress of Artemis ever since he was a baby. She couldn't use the excuse that he was weak anymore.
He almost jumped out of the tree all together but something stopped him.
He heard movement.
Percy waited silently, holding his breath as he heard movement approaching him.
Finally, Percy saw four figures making their way down from the large building.
The largest a tall man with a hawkish face and a military style hair cut seemed to be herding the other three down to the cliff that the hunters were stationed at. Percy noticed a tail speaking out from behind him.
So this was the monster. But who are the people with him? Percy thought. They were too far to hear or make out any clear details.
Two of them were smaller children, both around 11, they looked to be siblings, one boy in a brown aviators jacket and a girl with a strange green hat.
The fourth person was girl, or Percy assumed it was a girl, admittedly her short hair made it hard to tell at a distance but Percy had been around girls enough to know short hair wasn't uncommon. The girl looked to be about fifteen. Her features were hard to make out but she looked frustrated. She glared at the large man leading them from the building.
Percy assumed the monster was indeed the monster they had been hunting. But who were these kids?
He raised his bow and began to take aim, but the man was just out of range.
The four of them walked closer and Percy saw them stop at the edge of the woods in a clearing.
The man took out a phone and dialed on it, calling someone. He said a few things then hung up and turned to the other three. Percy couldn't make out what he was saying, but he did notice one thing.
