Not alone anymore

Chapter 50

"Oh god Zelena what's happening right now?"  She says nothing as everyone helps My wife.  "Please be ok sweetheart. Our baby needs his mommy".  I'm so scared that I'm beginning to shake. Zelena is right behind me and says. "Emma please give me the baby. You look like your about ready to pass out".  I didn't hear a word she said so she walks in front of me and says again. "Emma give me the baby".  I numbly nod and Zelena takes my son from my arms. I'm watching everything that the medical staff is doing. I don't know how much time goes by but I finally hear my wife's heartbeat again from the heart monitor. All the machines seem to be back to normal, as far I know anyway.  "Please tell me she's ok Dr. Crane".  The doctor walks over to me and puts a hand on my shoulder. "Yes Emma she's ok now".   "Thank you Doc. What the hell just happened to my wife?"  "Well Emma without going through the heart monitor papers I believe that Regina possibly experienced a slight cardiac episode".  I'm about to freak out now. "You mean she had like a heart attack or a stroke or something like that, will she recover from this, oh god what did I do to my wife?"   I begin to cry and go to Regina's side. It still looks like she's sleeping.  "I'm sorry Regina this is all my fault. Please wake up our baby boy wants to meet his mommy. Please wake up sweetheart".  "Emma she will be fine. I promise. A woman's body can go through a lot of stress during childbirth. My guess is that as she was pushing the baby out her blood pressure dropped so low that she passed out and that's why the machines went crazy".  "What causes this Doc?"  "Labor greatly affects blood flow, particularly during pushing and when it becomes to low a person can and will pass out".  "When will she wake up?"  "It could be any minute or it could be in an hour so. I promise we will keep a very close eye on her Emma. If anything else should happen the medical staff will be right there to assist her".  I nod and say.  "Thank you Dr. Crane. I appreciate everything you have been doing for us".   "Not a problem Emma. I'll be back in a little while. You can spend sometime with your family now".  "Ok, thanks again Doc". She nods, looks at me, Zelena and my son.  Oh god my son. What am I gonna do if Regina doesn't wake up?  I give a small smile to Zelena and my son then I focused on Regina.  "Regina my one and only love, please come back to us.  I don't know if I can do this without you".  I feel a hand on my shoulder and Zelena says. "Emma you have to think positive. She will be fine and she will wake up. I know my sister and she wouldn't miss this for the world".  I just nod and continue to hold my wife's hand and stare at her. It felt like forever but eventually Regina did start to wake up. Her eyes start to flutter open and she looks right at me. She opens her mouth to speak but no words come out. "Shhh it's ok sweetheart. Your mouth is probably dry would you like some water?  The nurse said it's ok to drink a little". She nods and I turn in my chair and put some water in the cup that's next to the bed. "Let me help you sit up in bed a little ok?"  She nods and I use the switch to raise part of the bed. "Here is your water sweetheart".   I put the cup to her lips and she takes a few sips. "Thank you Emma". She softy speaks. "Your welcome sweetheart".  Before I can say anything else she asks.  "Emma where's the baby?"  Zelena comes walking over to my side and hands me my son.  "He's right here babe. Would you like to hold him?"   Regina nods and I move to sit down next to her on the bed. I carefully place him into my wife's arms and look at the beautiful scene before me.  "He's ok?"  "He's perfect babe. The hospital pediatrician checked him out right after he was born and he's a perfectly healthy baby boy.  So how are you feeling?"  "I'm very tired my love but I'm feeling fine. Could you take him please Emma. I'm so tired that I'm afraid to drop him".  I gently take him and ask Zelena to put him in his hospital crib since he was sleeping. She does as I ask then says. "I'm going to leave you two, well three alone for a little while. I'm going to the cafeteria to get some coffee. Can I get anyone anything?"  Regina shakes her head no and I said I was fine. Zelena nods and leaves the room.  "Babe do you remember what was going on before you fell asleep?"  "No Emma I don't. What happened, Is everything alright?"  "It's fine now sweetheart. It seems that you past out".  Her eyes pop open wide. "What, why, am I ok?  Oh god what about the baby, is he ok?"   "Shhh relax babe. You and our son are both fine. You had already given birth when you passed out. Dr. Crane told me what happened so I'll tell you. She said that your blood pressure dropped so low during the delivery that you passed out. She said it sometimes happens so there is no need to worry but I'll be honest with you I've been freaking out till you woke up".  She runs the fingers of her left hand through my hair and says.  "I'm so sorry my love. I didn't mean to scare you".  "As long as you feel better now and the doctor checks you out I'll be fine". She asked me a few questions. She wanted to know more about what Dr. Crane had to say and she had questions about our son. While we were talking Dr. Crane walked in.   "Well look who's awake. How are you feeling Regina?"   "I feel tired and a little sore but other than that I think I'm fine. I'm sure you could confirm that for us though".   "Yes I believe I can". She examines Regina pretty much everywhere and then finally says.  "Ok ladies I have looked at all the charts, the printouts from the machines and I have examined you Regina. So I see no reason why you shouldn't be perfectly healthy from this day on".   "Doc, so she'll be ok, even after she passed out?"   "Yes Emma. That's exactly what I mean".  "That's awesome. Thanks Doc".  The doctor laughs a little and says.  "You are very welcome Emma. Do either of you have any questions?"   I shake my head no but Regina asks. "Emma said that I passed out because of my blood pressure, did that hurt our son in any way?"   "No Regina. Not at all. You had already delivered him a few minutes before you passed out. He is a perfectly healthy newborn baby boy".  "That's wonderful. Thank you so much Dr. Crane".  "No need to thank me. I'm just glad everyone is doing fine".  We talked for a few more minutes. The doctor wanted to know if we had a name for our son yet so we told her what we decided but we don't want to tell anyone else till our group of close friends are here and then we will make the big reveal.  She told us her lips are sealed. She said she had a few other patients to see and that she would check on us later and told Regina to get as much rest as she could now because once we go home with our son we probably wouldn't be getting much rest at all.  After that she left us alone. I asked Regina if she was hungry or wanted anything.  "No thank you dear. I think I'd just like to try to get some sleep if that's ok?"  "Of course it is babe. How about I push the call button for the nurse so she can take our son to the nursery".   "That sounds fine my love, thank you".   Regina was asleep before the nurse came to take our son back to the nursery. I laid in the bed next to my wife and then Zelena came walking in. I carefully got out of the bed and went to talk to Zelena. "Hey Z. Thanks for being here with us last night".  "It was nothing blondie. It was absolutely wonderful to see my nephew being born. Speaking of my nephew do I get to know his name now?"   "Nope Sorry Z. You'll find out when everyone is all gathered together. It's something Regina and I really want. His name is special so you will find out with everyone else".  "Fine. Then give me your keys. I want to go back to the house to take a shower and get some sleep and I'll text you before I come back to see if you want me to bring anything".   "Ok. That'll be great thank you".  I go into the nightstand by Regina's hospital bed and quietly take my keys out and close the draw. I give them to Zelena and say. "Be careful with my car".  "I promise to be careful with your car, now let me leave and go get some sleep for yourself".  "Alright. Thanks again Z see you later".  She actually gives me a hug and says.   "Not a problem. Congratulations mommy". And with that she walks out of the room and I get into the hospital bed next to my wife and fall asleep quickly.  Later Regina and I were awakened by the laughter of women. I looked over and see Granny, Ruby and Zelena walking into our hospital room.  "Well look at this, our new mommies are awake".  "Of course we're awake Zelena. It's tough to sleep with your boisterous laugh echoing off these walls".  "Keep it up blondie and we won't give you the food we brought".   "Ok I'll be good. I'm starving. What did you bring?"  Regina lightly slaps me on the shoulder and says. "Relax my love. Granny wouldn't let my sister keep the food from us".  "Oh yeah that's true. Ha ha Z".  Granny walks over with the take out bags of food and puts them on the table in front of us then she gives Regina and I hugs and congratulated us. Ruby did the same thing.  "So my girls eat up, I made both of your favorites and then I'd love to meet the newest member of our family".  "Well Granny I can take care of that second part right now. All I have to do is make a call".  Granny, Ruby and Zelena all smile as I call the nursery to ask a nurse to bring my son down so my family can see him. They said that they would bring him right down as Regina started opening the food bags. She must be really hungry. About 3 minutes later the nurse brought the baby in and I walked over to pick him up. "Thank you nurse Vicky".  She smiled and said if we need anything give her a call and then she left. I look over at Regina and she smiles at me and then nods her head towards Granny, as a sign to tell them our sons name. "I wasn't gonna make a big thing out of this, but this is really a big deal so just bear with me. All of you know that before I came here, I lived in foster homes and I had nothing. Before Granny took me in I was never treated with any real type of kindness before and I was surprised when even Ruby wanted to be my friend and now has become my best friend. Over the years Granny and Ruby Lucas have become family to me. Now as far as Zelena, we did get off to a rocky start but we've made it work and not only are we family but I hope that we have become good friends".  Zelena smiles and nods yes. "With Regina's blessing she has agreed to my suggestion on what to name our son. So without further ado ladies, Regina and I would like you all to meet the newest member of our family. Here is Lucas Swan-Mills".  I have never seen Granny cry before and now even though she's trying to fight it, I see how watery her eyes are. Ruby and Zelena are just crying as they hug each other. I look at Regina and she's some what paying attention as she's eating a teriyaki chicken and vegetable Lo mein stir fry that Granny made. I walk closer to Granny  and ask. "Would you like to hold your new grandson Granny?"  I think she's afraid to speak so she just smiles and nods yes. I hand Lucas over to her then I go join my wife on the bed and eat the teriyaki chicken, broccoli and carrot Lo mein stir fry Granny made for me. As Regina and I ate we watched all 3 ladies hold and love our son. It wasn't long before Lucas became cranky and Ruby handed him off to Regina. Luckily we were both done eating by then and as it turned out our son was hungry so all the ladies left us alone but said if we were still here tomorrow that they'd visit. Regina breastfed our son and then I called the nurse to come get him in case his diaper needed to be changed. We were able to be discharged the next afternoon and Zelena picked us up but I was the one to drive my family home.
